Agree with both of you and it’s the reason I wouldn’t sign a striker this summer. I would sign 2 quality wingers, 1 for each flank and then have Son, Richy and Veliz as striker options.

Son may still feature wider in occasional games or for certain periods during a game but would mainly be a striker.

It wasn't that long ago half this thread was banging on about how he was finished and we should get rid. This is a much nicer state of affairs.
Don't you worry about it. I've still got the list in my drawer. They will not get away with their shaemful treachery forever.

I don't think a world-class 9 is available to us anyway. I think this is a position we need to nurture.
I think there are more potential PL-ready AMs available to us.

Really you have such a list? I dont even remember half of what I said most of the time.
I think the guys who thought Son wouldn't recover just dont know him for long enough.
He is a model pro. His game evolved over the years. He knows what and how to train and also is thoughtful on his career.
My main concern is that he would do a Kane sooner or later, if we don't progress as a squad, especially now that he has gotten over his setback last season.

Son Heung-Min 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐃 his finger in a bust-up with a teammate on the eve of South Korea's shock Asian Cup exit.

The younger members of the squad ate their dinner quickly to enjoy a game of ping pong.

However Son, was unhappy with players leaving early, as meals are often seen as a chance for team bonding.

PSG's Lee Kang-in, was among the younger members Son took issue with. After an exchange of words, an altercation broke out, leaving Son, with a dislocated finger.

If there’s any truth to this, then Son’s comment along the line of ‘maybe the team no longer needs me’ after the cup exit makes sense.

Hard to believe as by just being older alone commands a lot of respect from someone younger in the Korea society so this seems very unusual. Definitely want to find out more on this.

One British media reported that there was an argument between Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in on the evening before the Asian Cup semi-final against Jordan.

The media claimed that when some young players, including Lee Kang-in, left early after dinner to play table tennis, 'captain' Son Heung-min, who regarded the dinner as a time for team unity, was displeased and spoke bitterly, leading to a physical fight. no see.

As a result of KBS' coverage, this report was confirmed to be true.

A high-ranking official of the Korea Football Association acknowledged the conflict within the team, saying that even Chairman Chung Mong-gyu was aware of this.

It is said that on the evening before the semifinals, there was a physical fight between Son Heung-min and Lee Kang-in, and some senior members of the national team, including Son Heung-min, even went to coach Klinsmann and requested that Lee Kang-in be excluded from the list.

This content was reportedly shared at the Korea Football Association executive meeting yesterday.

A day before the important game, a division occurred within the team, and the national team eventually lost to Jordan and was eliminated in the semifinals after repeated poor performances without a single effective shot.

It has been confirmed that the national team played the tournament in a situation of total difficulty, and criticism is growing that the failure of the Asian Cup was in fact a predicted result.

However, it is pointed out that it is unclear that the Football Association immediately acknowledged the fact of the conflict.

In general, it is extremely rare for the Football Association to directly acknowledge internal strife within the team.

Chairman Chung Mong-gyu is known to have conveyed this conflict to a high-ranking official of the Football Association yesterday, saying, "There is no justification for dismissing Coach Klinsmann."

This is the reason why there are harsh eyes wondering if this is an attempt to shift the focus of criticism from Coach Klinsmann to the ‘infighting within the players’.

Chairman Chung Mong-gyu has received all the details of the meeting of executives who agreed on the dismissal, but it is known that he is still contemplating the dismissal of Director Klinsmann.

And maybe I'm stretching it, but what Ange said after the Brighton game, at the time, I thought was a bit odd regarding Korea, in some way 'working against' him. Now it makes more sense if I take the comment as he was backing Sonny and emphasize that he's a world-class player. On the other hand, it's unlikely Sonny told him about what happened in the Asian Cup, as it's not Spurs-related.

Is that what a captain is all about, still coming back from that kind of disappointment at the Asian Cup to deliver in big moments?

Maybe the nation he plays for works against him but I think he's a world-class player. You look at his record in the Premier League, the toughest league in the world, his goal contributions irrespective of how the team's gone through the time he's been here have always been right up there.

nah, surely that just means because Korea aren’t regarded as a top footballing nation Son doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Whereas if he was English, Brazilian, Spanish etc he would be lauded more.

I think this is it although Ange could've maybe phrased it a bit better. It's not "his country works against him" (which implies that there's disharmony and/or they don't want him to play for them or whatever) but rather "his country's standing in world football works against him".

Aly Gold on the altercation:

Son Heung-min altercation and injury - expert view on Tottenham star's South Korea incident
football.london spoke to a South Korean football expert to get to the bottom of the international altercation that left Son Heung-min with a dislocated finger

The 31-year-old was playing with his index and middle fingers strapped together and it has now emerged that the Spurs captain was left with a dislocated finger after an incident behind the scenes on international duty at the Asian Cup. South Korea reached the semi-finals of the competition but struggled through the tournament with a series of disappointing performances, requiring extra-time on a couple of occasions and penalties against Saudi Arabia to advance to the last four.

In their semi-final game against Jordan, Son and the team failed to register a single shot on target as they limped out of the competition with a 2-0 defeat. That has led to disappointment back home in Korea at both the coach and former Tottenham striker Jurgen Klinsmann as well as the Korean Football Association.

It now turns out that ahead of that semi-final clash, an altercation broke out during dinner over a game of table tennis. Son, the captain of South Korea as well as Spurs, was reportedly unhappy that some of the younger players, including 22-year-old PSG star Lee Kang-in, had left a team meal early in order to play a bit of ping pong rather than enjoy the team bonding of the dinner.

With Son calling on his young team-mates to re-join the group, it is claimed that some of those younger players responded disrespectfully to the captain. That sparked a row between some of the older and younger players and football.london understands that the Tottenham man dislocated his finger while trying to calm down the situation.

So painful was the dislocation that days later Son was still warning people on his return to Hotspur Way before shaking hands with them in order to save himself any more discomfort.

Son and his fellow Spurs players were on a scheduled day off on Wednesday while the news caused a storm across Korea as people there woke up to the news, first reported in The Sun. While Tottenham do not comment on non-club matters, the Korean FA are yet to officially comment on the situation but did confirm to local media there that some young players had a disagreement with Son while they were playing table tennis.

South Korean football expert Sungmo Lee, who has followed and reported on Son during his years in the Premier League as well as other players in the national team, told football.london that the news might have been a handy deflection for the powers-that-be from the disappointment surrounding the team's Asian Cup exit.

"While the KFA admitted that there was an issue among Korean players including Son and Lee Kang-in, it was very weird that the story broke out from foreign media and then the KFA admitted the story right away," he said. "Considering the timing and circumstances, Korean fans and media suspected that maybe the KFA was trying to turn people's attention from Klinsmann and themselves to Son and Lee's issue as they are the two biggest football stars in South Korea right now."

Lee Kang-in has since posted an Instagram story apologising for his part in the incident.

"Good afternoon. This is Lee Kang In. There is an article about me having a dispute with Son Heung Min before the semi-final of the Asian Cup," he wrote. "I am very sorry to disappoint football fans who are always supporting the South Korea international team.

"I am so sorry. I should have been in the forefront and obeyed my senior brothers, but I'm sorry that I'm showing a bad side to football fans. I apologize to many of you who are disappointed in me. I am well aware of the interest and expectations football fans have of me. From now on, I will try to help my older brothers, in order to become a better player and a better person."

With the reverence Son is held by Koreans, you'd think it was suicidal for a younger player to disrespect him.

Imagine young English player telling Beckham to F-off whilst he was England captain.

According to this he was trying to break up the "fight" between Lee Kang-In and another player, and ended up getting injured due to it.

Might be time for Sonny to call it a day in international football and focus on his club career now. He's given everything and done his part for his country. Win something with Spurs, lift the trophy as captain and retire as a club legend.

I know that's what we'd all like him to do but 31 really isn't that old for an international captain. The next Asian Cup might be a bit too far away, but I'm sure he'd love the chance to captain SK again at the 2026 World Cup when he'll only be 33/34.

Even if he wasn't, disrespecting an elder in Korean culture is a big no-no.
