I think stuff like being 3-0 up at home to both Manchester clubs at half time and losing those matches came before that and contributed to the “Spursy” tag, although I’m not sure when the term which was first coined.

That Man Utd game was the "Lads... its Spurs" match wasn't it? 3-0 up at half time, they come out and Beckham scores a hat trick. I feel like that was the genesis of the tag.

Pretty sure "Spursy" was originally to do with bad luck and misfortune - lasgane-gate and being the first team to miss out on CL after finishing fourth. However, it slowly transformed into "lack of backbone", and became a stick to beat us with. Probably due to Sky pundits and the TikTok generation.

Wasn't Jamie Redknapp the first to actually use the expression? I'm sure he was reviewing a game and mentioned us being a bit well...Spursy. It then stuck. Prior to that I think we were just referred to as soft centered. Always a team who played some nice football but lacked the physical edge in games. I think Jol was the first to really have us fighting and to be taken more seriously. We were still losing big games though and considered legends at times.
Spursy is just an updated expression of what people were saying about us since the 90s I think.

Yep then they changed the rules so 4th place dropped out if a same league side won the CL in the previous year which done for us with Chelsea that was Spursy. The next year they changed it again so we are the only victims, that's Spursy.

The irony is, the majority of teams fans would rip a bollock off to be in a position to be considered 'Spursy' but yet try to take the piss.

Yeah, it’s a bit like the Oscar Wilde quip, the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about. We have made ourselves part of the conversation during the last twenty years, where clubs like Aston Villa, Everton and Leeds have been relative non entities when it’s come to challenging at the top of the league.

That match is often brought up as if (conspiracy theory alert) Fulop threw the game. However, Fulop had a lot of respect for and was honored to be signed by us.
It's more likely that he just had a bad day at the office. It was his first league game and only a third appearance of the season, so I suspect that he was a little rusty and not attuned to the game or team-mates. It's also possible that he was not physically well as the next year he had a tumor removed from his arm.
Whilst one could think (overcome by passion and distrust of the poor performance that crucial day) that he threw the game, Fulop was playing for a new contract (which, of course, he didn't get) and thrown in the deep end for his one league game of the season. I am thus more inclined to believe Fulop's take (just before his sad early exit to cancer) on the whole sorry day.....
