Can definitely see where you are coming from. I do think his exemplary attitude and commitment throughout (externally on and off the pitch) does mitigate this a little.

The thing that also helped was the stark contrast between Alderweireld and Eriksen. Both seemed like they wanted away but one never left me questioning whether they were actually giving it their all when selected to play.

I'd even disagree with that. Alderweireld hasn't come out publicly and commented, to his credit, and hasn't so obviously checked out like Eriksen but I don't think he's been putting in great performances. For the last 12 months I've seen lots of lazy defending and his passing a lot of the time just became awful aimless hoofs out of play or to the keeper, now suddenly and amazingly under a new manager he's looked a bit more solid and found the radar with his passes again - suspicious to me, and my instinct is I'd attribute that to being more focused.

I have tough time really analyzing his play over the past few months of Poch's tenure as I have a tough time really saying who out of the entire squad played all that well during that time.

You could probably attribute that to most of our players under Poch in the last year tbh.

Jan is 2 years old than Toby, better than Toby and has been with the club longer than Toby
Being older in this circumstance is a negative.

Being better is somewhat debatable.

Being at the club longer is totally irrelevant in this case.

So I still stand by the fact that giving Vertonghen anything more than 1 year would be complicated.

Maybe. And whilst some might get a pass, those who have eyes for the exit and have done for ages would not......

But hey, a damascene conversion. And we move on.

Throughout this whole fiasco Toby has been brilliant and professional giving some great performances (obviously this season hasnt been great but the entire team hasnt been great)

Im ecstatic he has a contract, surprised by the 3.5 years but think thats more to get a fee when we sell at 33 or something

Verts is a tough one.

If it's true about his lack of professionalism towards fitness and conditioning at the beginning of the season then it's very hard for the club to sanction giving a 33 year old anything more than a 1 year contract.
Personally I dont buy the part in bold at all considering 1) Ndombele was playing yet looked exhausted after 15 mins, 2) He showed no signs of being unfit when came back into the team and 3) he had a black eye at the time.

Yeah which is why I put the "if" in there as it's a massive "if" because something was obviously going on behind the scenes and no one really knows what it was.

Can you imagine the contrasting reaction on here if Eriksen was suddenly announced tomorrow

Shows the difference in maintaining your professionalism to the point that you A. don't say anything in public except the right things, and B. actually continue to play and behave like you give a shit.

Toby tried his gamble back when the original extension was on the table, and lost, when no other club came in for him. However, this is his reward for continuing to behave professionally above all else.

When debating whether Jose’s appointment was the right move I deemed that he might get ageing players performing again and get them to commit to the club.

This is a great first step. Whatever your feelings on past contract negotiations it is time to start afresh.

This is really good news. He’s an experienced defender who is still very solid and Mourinho clearly loves him. He isn’t that old either really. Whatever went on in the past is history now.

As long as the contract is at the right price, this is good news. The cost of bringing in an equivalent player, even just past their prime would still be quite high. With regards to his performance, it seems that Toby seems to have lost a step but i'm not sure that that is all that is in play. When we had Kyle Walker, Kyle's positioning was pretty predictable and he usually made an intelligent recovery run. With Trippier's lack of pace and Aurier's unpredictable positioning, it seems that Toby had to think more and cover more ground which exposed him more. One of the reasons we need an upgrade at RB is to allow Toby to play to his strengths.

I'd be hoping for Pereira to come in next. Then we're starting to look as though we've a back line we can count on.

Pereira-----Toby-------Sanchez-------Verts

Could be improved with the addition of Ake, perhaps.
