No, you’re wrong. Dier is not quick. Those fasted recorded speeds are absolute nonsense and regularly have obscure slugs like Jagielka up as the fastest.

You’re talking bollocks mate. Stats are telling us that Walker, Walcott and Sterling are slower than Dier. Keep up .

It's just the difference between acceleration and top speed, acceleration is more important in football because the sprints are over a short distance but it stands to reason that players of a certain build have the ability to hit a top speed over a large distance but don't have good acceleration.

I wonder if Pochettino is as entrenched in what makes a good full back as you?

Also, Foyth and Dier are both faster than Aurier, more comfortable on the ball than Aurier, and far better passers of the ball than Aurier.

I’m not happy with the diamond in any circumstances.

Foyth is Argentina’s first choice right back.

I agree that I’d rather keep Aurier until we are able to replace, but at the same time if Pochettino intends not to play him (so far 25 matches in two seasons) then what use actually is he?

These points can be read in any order you wish :)
Dier faster than Aurier?

Dier may well have the highest top speed at 35kph but the problem is, how long does it take to get there?!
He certainly isn't quick over a short distance and he's not exactly fleet of foot either.

Quite. It’s a pointless stat. Not sure why were even discussing it seriously to be honest.

Keep him for another year. He's capable of good performances as shown last year. Just needs to stay healthy.

If we trust unsourced internet images, and I see no reason we shouldn't, the below is Usain Bolt accelerating till the 60-70m segment of the 100m. But almost all the acceleration is done by 25m. At which point Dier's elite speed will be showing itself and useful in match situations at full back. It's plausible we only think he looks slow because he has no reason or room to get all the way up to speed in CM. And his high speed reading did come in the season he played at full back...

Care not who's the quickest. Safe in the knowledge that once they reach their destination, they will kick the ball back to from whence they came.

Aurier don't simply play the ball backwards. That's more Trippier and Dier. Aurier has good inter play with the midfielders, always looking to play the ball forward.

Good post.
I just cant really recall ever seeing, what I'd describe as, a burst of real pace from Dier. Now I'm not saying he's particularly slow, just not as fast or explosive as Aurier.

We need him to stay.

I’m not sure he’s any better than KWP (and I don’t particularly rate him either.)

At this point it’s hard to see Aurier as anything but a flop. If clubs are interested now, this may be our only chance to recoup some of what we paid for him.

Probably true but he has shown genuine quality in the CL and he’s much more prone to cross the ball more readily and accurately than our other fullbacks. We need him fit and putting in some serious shifts because we are flat as fuck at the moment

Care, or care not, but it is Shane Long fyi, or it was anyway. I can only imagine players were much slower back in them 2016/17 days...
