Glad we've gone for 2 solid midfielders. I'd have picked Vert over Gallas and VDV over Lennon, but it's OK.

Vertonghen and Rafa on the bench - Jeez!

Still, good experience in that back four and boy do we need it today as we will undoubtedly be tested and then hopefully Bale, Sigurdsson and Lennon can strike on the break.

Hope more than expectation of a result here but lets try and be positive - at least it's not 442!

Vertonghen on bench is the surprise for me.... Maybe avb is planning an easier team for his debut... Gallas captain as well? I thought he'd be 4th or even 5th choice.

Gallas captain. Surprised no VDV but Sig had to start. Looks like we are going for pace at the back. Hudd and Dawson not even on the bench!

I thought Sig did enough in pre season to deserve to start. Makes sense for Gallas experience to be used.

Ok. I suppose extending the benefit of the doubt to cover the first match is feasible. But no VDV ???

subs: Cudicini, Naughton, Vertonghen, Jenas, Townsend, Van der Vaart and Kane

AVB must have been tempted to put Caulker on the bench after his England call up as well as Verts, but he's made a decision and gone with a bench which provides cover for every single posiition.

The right call.

Jesus. All you fucking doom and gloom merchants. Can you nor just see how we go with our new manager, tactics, formation and team before you start predicting our downfall. Look at what west brom are doing to Liverpool today.
We have a good nucleus of a team . Obviously not ideal up front but we are going into a game with a striker that has scored over 100 goals for us and not far off one of the most dynamic and solid midfields in the league. Ffs.

My god looking at that team how far backwards have we gone in the three months since last season ended. Can't see us getting anything today! Levy has a lot to answer for!

how can he adapt on the bench?

It makes some sense to make changes gradually. Gallas and Kaboul know eachother, it's a backline that is familiar. Away at Newcastle I am OK with it. Vertonghen will start our first home game I'm sure.

We should be able to get at the Newcastle defence. They will miss Coliccini. It's a sensible lineup and I would expect us to get a draw. COYS
