I don't know about preferred option maybe original option as they didn't own any of the property around the ground but they set about buying them up quietly in the early years of the century.
Expanding The Lane was considered by Sugar but don't think any of those plans were really viable. New stadium was first considered 2007 and plans for NPD were first announced 2008 , Levy kept other options open but think almost everyone will agree that what we have now was the right thing to do, same walk to the ground , same pubs , same shops , same feeling of coming home after Wembley.

I remember a consultation meeting with architects, Levy and one or two other Spurs execs, before NPD existed, when the plan was the redevelopment of WHL, concentrating on rebuilding the West Stand and improving the other three stands.
I believe it was during that period and as a result of their findings that the limitations imposed by not owning the surrounding land and properties became clear, in financial terms.
The significant point isn’t so much what their preferred option was, because that changed a number of times with circumstances, but the fact that it quickly became obvious to Levy & Co ( Sugar had no idea really) that redeveloping WHL, which many fans still wish had happened, was simply not a viable plan.
