I'm not sure Dier is that far behind Romero and is certainly more disciplined. His long balls are better but he lacks a bit of pace admittedly. It's VDV we'll miss the most, like Walker he can recover from any mistake. Hopefully Phillips will step up, it's worth a look I think rather than Dier/Hojbjerg.
Yeah, Dier does also have a hell of a lot of experience which could do Phillips the world of good for his first few games.
In fact, he may be a better initial partner than Cuti who has a history of not being quite as controlled as Dier.

I agree, but also at the time, people would've gone ballistic about bringing in Lenglet, even as a 3rd choice, people were losing their mind when we were linked to him again.
Lots were bitching and moaning about VDV rather than Tapsoba too, saying we went for the “cheap option” again.

Happens at all clubs. A lot of players just play on if there's a chance if it healing over time despite being told surgery is the best option long term.

and the players don’t want to lose their place.

Not sure about this obsession with cost, same with Vicario. We just needed another recognised centre back but I'm sure we would have got one if we shifted Sanchez sooner. I wish we just took the gamble and signed one regardless and left one out of the squad if needed.

2021/2 admittedly in a different system Dier was excellent. The truth is he is not as bad or as good as the 2 extremes of opinion.
I’m not a Dier apologist, in fact quite the opposite, but A LOT of our players looked shit last season.

He’s not one for the future and he will struggle a bit in this Ange system, but he’s nowhere near as crap as people make out.

Should he be with us next season - no. Can he do a job until VDV is back - yes.

Just watched it on Sky, he seemed to say ‘a couple of months, so into the new year’
Even without surgery it was always going to be 6-8 weeks which is 2 months. I think we just hope best case he’s back for the games after the January break.

Going to the Bournemouth game on New year's Eve, absolutely gutted I won't get to see him play. He plays in same position I did so was looking forward to seeing him play live so I could imagine what I would have been like if I had any talent, good looks and a top physique.

What a miss he's going to be at our busiest time of year for fixtures

Those saying that we shouldn't have let Sanchez go. I think that though he did come on against Brentford and do well, what you gain from him (Vs say Dier) in having pace against balls over the top you lose from him being so uncomfortable on the ball. He will be targeted by pressing teams from the first minute and it will affect our entire possession game. And look at the teams we have coming up - Citeh, Newc, Villa, Brighton.

I'm OK with that gamble though obvs would have been better to get cover in earlier. But you can't do everything in one window

If we are going to use Philips at all then we should start him tomorrow to get into the groove before the more difficult games. Could be one of those blinding decisions where a star is born. Or he could be really out of his depth. I'll go with the former as I'm an optimist :)

I'm loving all the put Phillips in there to replace Mickey, and then Ange picks Dorrington to start on Saturday!
