I’ve been holding fire on our CB search all summer, even coming up with excuses for Levy.
But absolute silence, nothing!!!
We haven’t had a proper update in 2 weeks about our most precious position and it’s gone dead.
That Athletic report is a lot of guff to me, it says to me they know as much as everyone else, nothing.

If Levy messes this CB reinforcements up we’re in for a long hard season and he has nowhere to hide.
Bordering negligence, get it done by Tuesday next week to at least save yourself a tiny bit of grace.
We always come up short somewhere and it’s infuriating.

Maybe. Maybe not. As I said, hopefully we see us scoring more goals and none of us are going to give a shit if we’re winning games 3-2 instead of 1-0
Maybe, maybe not? Come on now. Stop burrowing your head in the sand.

I agree with the second part, but if we are giving away cheap goals we will drop points almost for certain.

We will let in lots of goals this season because we'll be playing on the front foot against a bunch of the best teams in the world in the toughest league with the finest coaches whoever is in defence and I think people need to come to terms with that and Hope we can outscore them and that's the bit I am sure will take time.
This latest report is rather dispiriting though, I thought we were told it was in a ready to go situation.

I’m not burying my head in the sand. We need a CB. Ideally we would of signed one a few weeks ago but I draw the line at saying “oh well boys this seasons fucked now we haven’t signed a CB in July even though the season doesn’t start for another 2 weeks”

I think the difference of signing one now or in 2 weeks is pretty minimal but that’s just me. Either way I won’t be losing my shit about it but the rest of you can crack on.

It's gonna be Gentle Ben alongside Romero vs Brentford isn't it?

Got a very strong feeling we're going to get shafted that game.

I don’t know is the honest, short answer. You’re asking me to make long term predictions over the course of the season depending on 1 singing in defence. I have absolutely no idea if the CB we sing is going to be any good or not

Who’s taking about a back line full of strangers anyway? We’ll have 1 or 2 familiar faces in there. There’s a million variables to consider and overly focussing on whether we sign a CB in July or deadline day just seems silly to me. Yeah ideally we’d have every signing sorted well in advance of the season but it doesn’t work out like that for any club, not just us.
If it was just this transfer window I'd be inclined to be more forgiving but it's been 3 years mate that whoever our manager has been has wanted the CB's upgraded, 3 bloody years. That unfortunately is just us.

Ha Ha.

No one is saying the season is fucked. Me saying it will likely cost us points and possibly league position is not the same thing at all, and you damn well know it.

I’m not “losing my shit”. We have known for about 3 years we need a CB or two. We apparently identified our targets early, we moved swiftly with the GK so why not here?

I haven’t once said the season is over, so don’t start chucking everyone in together.

Surely even you can admit that the more time with a settled defence and GK the better. Hence why pre season is imperative. It would have been bad enough with just a new CB but we have a GK brand new to the league. It’s all about understanding and that takes time to build.

I think Tosin and Lenglet looking more likely than anything at the moment
It certainly seems that way doesn’t it.

But if we sell Kane I’d like to think we’d sign one of VDV & Tapsoba and then maybe one of the above but we shall see.

What I’m absolutely baffled by is the VDV deal was ready to go, what happened?
Did we change our mind?
Shit our pants?
Not got the money?

It’s very weird.

I think a lot of people (not me personally) would consider no European football as a “season is fucked lads”

This is inexcusable tbh, there is no justifiable reason we haven’t brought in a starting CB. It’s been years we’ve needed one and the season starts in just over 2 weeks. Fact is, if we earmarked Tapsoba as the best available defender out there to slot straight in to the first 11 then we should have paid the €50 mil they are supposedly asking. In this day and age that isn’t actually that much for a quality defender. Don’t kid yourself for a moment, we can afford it we just won’t pay it. If we rate him that highly he should have been the first business we did. If we didn’t rate him we should have moved on, as it is we have put ourselves in limbo. Deliberately and seemingly because we just can’t stomach paying the money required.

I wonder what happens when we do actually sell PEH or Kane, are we really going to invest the money back into the squad? Personally I see maybe a bit of it spread out on cheap options and rest being pocketed.

Without two quality additions to our defence we will be destroyed in the PL. Ange’s tactics leave very little room for defensive error, as we know.

What’s even funnier Ange said in an interview he sees Ben Davies as a good option at his inverted left back role and likes him, but proceeds to play him CB, surely that’s a message to the board.

i am guessing there is more to it than 25 mill that is for sure. My guess is that we do not feel he is good enough at least not for over 25-30 mill, also he is 22, Spurs are not taking another expensive Sanches kind of risk.

The problem is, the players we know are good enough cost upwards of 70 mill and we are not going for those either. so yeah, here we are in limbo. That said, players that looks like fantastic in other leagues still fail hard in the PL. Coulibaly as an example.
so the 20-25 mill potential is probably the best way to go 🤷‍♂️

I think this could well be cos he's the only left footer of the bunch, isn't too bad on the ball and is a bit quicker than Dier.

I don't think Ange is the type to play games like Jose and Conte and "send messages to the board". I think he genuinely believes Ben is the best LCB option currently at the club for his style of football.

Either way, it doesn't bode well if Ben's starting any games at CB once the season starts. He's clearly not anywhere near the required level to be a starting CB in a back 4 of a team with genuine aspirations.

I'm not angry because our ambition is not to win. If it was we would have signed the CB a year or two ago. our entire transfer modus operandi is about opportunity and deals.

We still have over 2 weeks until the season starts. Last season was last season. We have a totally different manager now who plays in a completely different way to the previous 2. We may end up conceding just as many goals next season but score twice as many getting us more points. This is what the excitement abint Ange is about isn’t it, attacking football. We’ll sign a CB. If we don’t I’ll join the Levy is a bald **** ranks but until then I’m pretty
Chill.

Our goals scored tally last season was 70 - our highest for 5 years, and our third-highest in the last decade.

The reason we did so badly, is not because we couldn't score - it was because we conceded 50% more goals than our ten-year average. Because our defence is diabolical.

So this "it's okay, we'll just score more goals!!" line is transparent cack.
