I’m a bit confused as to why folk think we wouldn’t go for both him and Tapsoba.

At CB we need two new players, to go along with Romero. The rest of them (Dier, Sánchez, Davies, Tanganga) are nowhere near good enough to play for Spurs and we have criminally neglected properly addressing this since Toby and Jan both left.

If it means £50m + £30m just on the CBs then so be it. It’s absolutely necessary.

And if the club can clawback £20-30 mill on outgoings then it's a better outlook

Would be so spurs to go the younger, cheaper and far more raw option, and then bring in Lenglet as well. I'm happy with this signing if it's in addition to tapsoba or another far more complete defender; but if he's the main CB signing then I'm going to be disappointed; it's not enough

He’s just significantly worse than Tapsoba currently so it feels underwhelming, particularly if he is the main CB signing.

It basically means while our defence may improve next season, it won’t improve significantly because VdV is very raw and will make a lot of mistakes. Just as importantly he’s nowhere near as composed, good on the ball or at passing as Tapsoba.

Signing him along with Tapsoba would have had me absolutely buzzing.

As it stands if we just bring in VdV, he’s a good talent, a lot of potential but it means our defence won’t be elevated like it would have been if we signed Tapsoba.

We have saved loads of money by getting Vicario and Solomon cheap. We should be able to go big on CBs.

For that reason I can’t help but be a little disappointed.

Dude, you’re getting disappointed about a scenario that’s yet to fully unfold…
We’ve been acting very decisively in this window and if the club/Ange deem Tapsoba a priority, it’ll likely get done, IMO. Can’t sign every player at once, and there are tons of moving parts with every deal.

Maybe I'm wrong but looks like he's better in the air than Tapsoba and his defending style makes him better partner to Romero

You mean one charging forward like a madman to get a tackle in and one charging back like a madman to get a block in.

Hmmm. You know what?

Lot of people worrying about it being Van de Ven and Lenglet.

But the way I've been seeing it financially was that it would be one of either Tapsoba & Lenglet or Van de Ven & Tosin.

Still personally holding out hope though for the miracle of Tapsoba & Van de Ven.

But we need the players in there. Years of under investment have got us to the point where it’s a necessity. We can afford it too. Sure we need to offload a couple but they’ll soon go when they realise they won’t get to play.
You know that, I know that but Daniel Levy won't agree.

Would be a good signing, although I do have two concerns with him. He's doesn't seem the best at aerial duels, plus I feel like he needs an experienced partner, problem is Romero also needs this. Really hope we get another defender as well.

I think I prefer Van de Ven we dont have a lot of pace in the back line and we would def get that with him

Can he actually defend though? Pace is important, but I feel we need a calm head.

In fact, if it is VDV and we can’t/won’t push the boat at on another expensive CB purchase then I think we could do a lot worse than a short term experienced solid CB. Even if that means he is coming towards the end of his career.

Statistically weaker than Tapsoba in the air.

More worrying he’s in the bottom 15th percentile for Aerial Win %, with 52.2%.

Tapsoba had a poor year aerially this year for some reason but in past seasons has been good aerially.

I'm a million miles away from being an expert on the lad, but a few vids I've seen appear to back up my initial thoughts, namely that he could very easily slot in as a LB. He looks Jonah Lomu freakish tearing down the wing, opposition defenders bouncing off him, but he's got that pace, plus a good final ball. Don't discount us buying him primarily as a LB, with the ability to cover for a LCB (hopefully Tapsoba). As to why he's been bought first; who knows? Maybe it's simply that Wolfsburg are easier to deal with than Tapsoba's club, or that the Tapsoba deal is more complex, or requires a sale from us to finance in the first place.

Need to remember this is still only the first week in July. Can easily see the 2nd CB coming in once we've shifted 3 or 4 players. If we have to wait another 6 weeks so be it - there are plenty of upgrades on our current defenders out there (even if we miss out on Tapsoba)

His running style is pure Forrest Gump. Looking forward to him running down the tunnel and up the Seven Sisters road after each home game

Anyone with eyes could see how much of a mess we were at the back last season. The priority and money should be getting piled on CB recruits. Especially after getting 3 other gaps in the squad filled for a combined £56m outlay (excluding sales).

There is no excuse at all for the club to go cheap on CBs, we need 2 top quality ones to come in. Not one plus Lenglet back, but 2 starter calibre CBs. I’m holding out hope we get VDV and Tapsoba both in, so I’m saving any anger or frustration until further into the window, and I’m choosing to take todays news as positive as I do really like VDV. Also, because I refuse to believe the club would be that stupid as to not bring in another after him.

Maybe we can get VDV now at a fee comfortable before sales, Taposba would require us to shift one maybe 2 before we can. Might miss out on VDV if we keep waiting. If hes 35-40m That takes us to close to 80M on ins and 10m on outs. We keep waiting and we miss out on both.

That defending is what Porro and Romero did several times at the end of the season. He'll fit right in then.

They did exactly that in that joke of a performance against Newcastle away. The first goal is almost exactly as the twitter video. Then they teamed up again in the next match against Sancho and United and just let him have a shot. Then against Liverpool, Porro is in no man's land with his mate Romero for their opener, Romero less than convincing on their second and Romero giving away a pen for their third.

I think we will have to push for VDV and Tapsoba really. If we get rid of a load of high earners off the wage bill like perisic, lloris and ndombele then that is more money to spend on fees. Even clubs like Brentford are buying centre backs for £25m, we can afford it.
we can afford it but I can't see us buying both. It will be one + a cheap option or loan.

But the thing is we weren't a mess at the back really, our xG against was 5th best in the league.
The biggest reason why we conceded a lot of goals was goalkeeping situation and this problem has been already solved.
