I like to think we can get to the group stages and keep giving these younger lads some game time.

Would be nice, I agree. But I certainly don’t think we should be sending our big guns out to grounds like this with a PL game on the horizon like some on here are suggesting.

If it is a second rate competition we should dominate it but we are getting our backsides handed to us instead. Shows that we are a LONG way from being serious title challengers.
You can’t say that! Look at the team we fielded tonight.

Dissapointing result, not so much the score but was hoping to see at least a couple of young bloods stand out but everybody was poor tonight. Still hopefully they will have learnt something tonight and can only get better, well some might.
As I say I'm not to worried about the result as I'm sure Nuno will put in 3 or 4 senior players for the return and I fully expect a comfortable 2 or 3 nil win as they are a very ordinary side. We made them look good tonight by not putting them under to much pressure by constantly giving the ball away. Problem is as the tournament progresses the quality will get stronger and this team tonight will get hammered so it remains to be seen how serious Nuno is going to take it.

We’re still in it going into the second leg. That’s about as much as you can say.

Lo Celso and Romero will come good. Stop your bed wetting.

I didn’t have an issue with the team he put out, I felt it was arrogant but no problem. I had an issue with the weak bench. All it told Scarlett was that the responsibility to win this game was on his shoulders. That’s not fair on a 17 year old with no senior goals for us.

Yeah, definitely think we should have had a couple of Lucas, Bergwijn, Son, Dele, Hojbjerg, Reguilon on the bench in case of emergency

The problem we have now is, Nuno knows he can't trust some of our second team anymore, which means having to rely on first teamer's going forward in this competition, which doesn't bode well for injuries.

These games against teams from ok leagues playing their cup final on a dodgy pitch are always tricky. Just like away games against lower league opposition in the cup. Only these are teams who have better quality than low level English sides and are playing on home soil. At home we win this game by at least a couple, i promise you.

Some thoughts:

1. That was humiliating and shameful performances from Winks and Lo Celso. As two of the senior team members, it was their job to control the middle of the field. They were thoroughly outhustled and outthought.
2. Our depth is atrocious. I was actually surprised at just how bad some of the players were. Not just in terms of touch, passing, and movement. But mentally, I didn't see many instances where our players wanted to win the second ball. The indifference was baffling.
3. Sess had a better second half. First half he was embarrassingly shit. But seemed to be a bit more aggressive in the second 45.
4. Was Nuno sending a messaging to Paratici and Hitchen about the quality of the squad? Flat out refusing to bring on any players from Sunday, and relying on the kids, demonstrated just how thin the squad is, in terms of the 'balance' he mentioned. Based on what I saw today, we have weakened as a squad so far this summer TW. Gil was okay, but nowhere close to Lamela's quality. Romero was rusty AF, and his game today couldn't hold a candle to Toby. We have no striker depth. No attacking midfielder depth. Not enough quality backups in CM either. If this game wasn't a wake up call, I don't know what is.
5. Credit to the opposition. They bullied us defensively. It really was boys vs men. However, they were next level shit going forward. If we player our 'first XI' against them in the second leg, they will only score if we want them to. The emphasis will be on us being more attack minded. It's a pity that the team tonight lacked any grit and tenacity, as not many of them will play next Thursday, now that it has become a rescue mission.
6. How awful is N'Dombele's fitness, if he can't break into that lineup tonight? I'm sorry, but I'd gladly take him at 25% over what I saw in terms of progression up the field and breaking the lines. Unless we have a replacement, then Nuno needs to find a way to get Tanguy going.
7. Doherty is possibly the worst fullback I have seen at Tottenham is many a year. He is so shot of confidence, that whatever little ability he had, is now non-existent. He, like Lo Celso and Winks is a senior player and should have been leading by example. Instead, he was made to look pathetic and weak against a much better midfielder and defender on their side. Where's his pride?
8. I may be alone here, but selling Foyth was a mistake. We have seen how good he's been this Summer for Argentina, and has come back playing very well at RB for Villeral. Having him and Tanganga as our full-back options would've been a much better idea. Now, it would appear we only have one decent RB, who has a history of getting injured. And we have no imminent incoming players to replace Aurier and Doherty. The former will have to be reintegrated into the first team squad, if he doesn't move on, and we can't get a replacement... which now looks to be the most likely outcome.

Lastly, this game was one of the most toothless and limp-dicked performances I've seen from us in the past 3 years. And there's been some humdingers during that time. But this really stood out as garbage. To the best of my knowledge, I don't think we had more than two shots all game long. That's inexcusable. However, it is also emblematic on an ongoing system issue at the club when it comes to mentality. Far too many in and around the squad that simply don't have the right attitude in terms of competitiveness. That was so evident today. Too many players are in permanent zombie mode. I have no idea how to get them to start playing with more intensity. That's will be one of Nuno's bigger problems this year to overcome; How to ingratiate and ingrain that sense of toughness and application throughout the first team squad, U23s, and U18s. Especially if there no other players come in. We need to rely on what we have. And what we have, isn't good enough right now.

Sorry for the rant. But like I said... it was so goddamn awful, it's hard not to be troubled.

Believe me - you ain't alone on the Foyth thing... he would've made a positive difference playing for us this season....

GLC was immensely disappointing. Felt sorry for John and Scarlett who were let down by the seniors alongside them. Sess was better 2nd half. Clarke looked decent. CCV was a train wreck and managed to almost gift them a 2nd by falling over with the ball between his legs which resulted in a FK on edge on our area.

I didnt watch it so was Romero really as bad as people are making out?

So it's less that he was that bad and more than he didn't look as sharp as you'd hope, he's one of those players that we need to instantly come in and be awesome. Could have easily had a couple of yellows for mistimed tackles and got turned once when pulled out on the wing, stuff that happens when you're not up to pace. Him putting in a 6/10 performance is much much more of a problem for us than CCV or Winks being 3/10. It's a bit of a bum game though so not too much that can be taken from any single performance.

Similar with Lo Celso, we need him to really be firing now but he had a shocker.

Find it strange that so many people are keen for us to stay in this competition. I get the argument about the coefficient but other than that it is entirely pointless. I could barely muster the energy to care about a second rate conception like the Europa League let alone this thing.
and yet, here you are? It's more games and chances to watch Spurs, plus the chance of a pot?

I realize we are not playing our best players but even a full team of our reserves should smash that team. They only scored because Winks made a stupid mistake that professionals at that level shouldn't make. That aside, we can't even get a shot on goal.

Doherty - Shite
Davies - Shite
Sessegnon - Shite
Clarke - Shite

I will allow the kids because the seniors should have stepped up. They were garbage. Honestly, I hope to god no scouts watched winks tonight because he was really bad.

Agreed. I would be quite happy if we go out after the 2nd leg so we can concentrate on winning something in a domestic competition with no long midweek journeys to who knows where.
