Here's some other very notable examples, in addition to those given by @mil1lionCan anyone recall a time when a club has effectively 'won' one of these star-player-wants-to-leave stand-offs? I can only recall Rooney's U-turn at United at the moment.
Cristiano Ronaldo tried to leave Real Madrid (more than once reportedly) years before he finally moved to Juventus.
Yaya Toure tried to force a move from Man City in 2014, following the best season of his career (20 PL goals), but stayed for another 4 years.
Suarez agreed to join Arsenal (prompting Wenger's ridiculous bid of £1 above a buy-out clause that didn't exist), but stayed. He did join Barcelona a year later, but that was an entirely separate negotiation with a different buying club and much more money involved. The fact that they managed to keep him for another year and then sell him for over 60% more than he'd tried to force a move for does set a positive precedent (contradicts what a lot of people think about Kane's value crashing next summer).
EDIT:
Odemwingie not only skipped training but turned up at his desired club's stadium...but ultimately stayed put.
West Brom also forced Berahino to stay when we were in pursuit of him.
They might not fit your idea of a "star player", but they were star players for West Brom.
