Davies is criminally underrated on here.

I swear the level of vitriol against him has quadrupled since after the Everton game.

I get it, he’s not exactly one of the top LBs in the world or nothing but he’s fucking consistent in my book. Yeah, some will say he’s consistently average or whatever and that’s debatable obviously but he’s a decent player without being anything spectacular. He’s also had injury problems and he’s never hid away from anything. Plus he’s been with us a good few years, liked by whoever has coached him which tells me he’s a good trainer and professional.

I get excited about every new signing even if they’re someone I’ve never heard of (which is more often than not) but there’s no need for the Davies is so shit he can’t do X Y and Z bollocks.

Totally agree. His positioning, tackling and general defending is top notch. Very solid and consistent 7/10 player every week. He is also a very experienced player now and can teach players like Reguilon a thing or two (even if they have attributes he doesn't).

Davies has been hardworking and dependable throughout his time at the club, please show some respect. I can see him forming part of a back 3, should this deal go through.

I have no issue with Davies.

I think what people are saying though, if we want to challenge properly for trophies then he's a player that's definitely upgradable and should be used as a rotation option like he was under Poch.

Davies is ok. As is Aurier. Or Winks. Or Dier. Or Lucas. Or Sissoko. Or even Toby lately. That's our problem. To many ok players and we finished in ok position last year. For most PL clubs 7 is ok right?

This kid will scare the life out of people down the left. Pushing teams back because they are fearful of getting countered. I feel with Davies it could draw people onto us more because they know he wont be running in behind as much. Almost let's teams come forward more because the threat behind isn't there. This will make us less predictable.

That's fair and on the money imo.

I agree 100%, there are not too many other back up left backs that I would want in the squad - he done it well when Rose was at his peak, model proffesional and the versatility to play left centre back in potential back 3s is another plus point.
He can’t tackle. No timing. No pace. No positional sense. His passing at crucial moments is poor. His crossing is woeful. He’s an old-school left back in terms of overall position on pitch and not a very good one at that.

Were taking all the risk and giving Madrid a cash injection in the here and now. that's 2 years development time, possibly more that could be given to a "permanent tranfer".

Highly likely the fee will be paid over 4 years or so.

Quite common in football, particularly during COVID, and particularly us at any time.

Wouldn't surprise me if we negotiated something more back loaded after year 1 or 2.

Madrid aren't as desperate for cash as they are being able to book the fee in their accounts.

When you factor in the likely loan for for Sessegnon, it's not going to cost us much in cash terms over the next 12 months. £4-5m max would be my guess.

Very smart move by us, both financially and in terms of squad planning.

A better team, a better squad, and greater flexibility to get our youngsters 50+ games on loan over 2 years.

Well, we get this wrapped up, him and Doherty certainly sees us improve in the attacking stakes concerning our fullbacks.

Add Bale and we're suddenly looking a fine prospect. Ndombele firing on all cylinders, Lo Celso getting back up to speed, then I'm more than happy with the outlook.

A good window could potentially become an outstanding window.

If this is us skint, feck da money, let's do skint every window.

Why do people feel the need to slag off other players rather than just be happy we’re signing a good player to compete.
If it helps I’ve been slagging him off for years.
He had a purple patch a couple of years ago, I’ll give him that. But he was average before that and imo worse since.

...and I don’t care if the room values him. I think he’s awful and gave groaned so many times when attacks and promising moves have broken down because either his cross is useless, he gives the ball away, or makes the wrong pass.

Laugh it up, fuzzballs.

I'm sure it's probably been said but this deal for me represents a seismic shift in attitude from Levy. I couldn't see him going near a deal like this previously (buy back clause) without it being championed by an established winner like Mourinho.

Can't wait to see this guy play for Spurs.

If we do get Sergio he would be a welcome upgrade on Davies. Let's not make this a reason for playing a back 3. It rarely works and we lose an offensive player. Really hoping this signing goes through

I’ve watched the obligatory welcome to Tottenham YouTube video and he does look like a great all round player but have any virgins on here, that’s watched him more than a handful of times, got any good breakdown. Sorry I have skimmed through this thread but I’m interested in any breakdown of his strengths and weaknesses.

He is a back up that wont let you down against lower half opposition and a decent human to have around the squad. But the best example I can think of is when we were chasing Chelsea for the league and we got close but we were playing them in the next game. Rose got ruled out in the build up and my heart sank because I knew what was coming. Chelsea pinned us back on that side and Chelsea's goal came from that side of the pitch. deep down you just know he isn't a winner. The reverse fixture to the game where Dele got the two headers I think it was just before xmas.

Ben is a good player. Sergio is better. Simples.

As for the... I’d rather have a solid player at left back than an awesome player who might play awesome and might leave at some point in the future argument...

WTF!

That’s a risk with every signing, buy back or not... this is a creative way to get a great player in, under market value.

As I’ve said before... 2 trophies in 28 years. Enough with the future, let’s win now whilst we have a manager who knows how to do it.
