30% of Rooney's international goals came in meaningless friendlies. 80% of his goals came against opponents that were significantly poorer than England at the time. He managed 1 World Cup goal, despite playing in 3 World Cups. After his breakout campaign in Euro 2004, which he did perform well in, it took him another 12 years to get his next European Championship goal. And that was a penalty.
And that's not even counting overall performances. Even taking away Kane's goals in the last 18 months, he has been instrumental in a lot of his teammates goals scored. Particularly Sterling's goals. 3 assists plus a 'hockey assist' against Bulgaria shows what I mean. Rooney, nor Shearer, has dominated teams as regularly as Kane has in the last couple of years.
Yet everyone in the media reveled in seeing Rooney climb up the all time scoring charts. I struggle to recall any pundit playing down his record because most goals were either meaningless or against poor opposition.
Kane had a fairly slow start to his international career, largely down to Hodgson favouring a declining and undeserving Rooney. 5 goals in 17 games over 2 years while Hodgson and Rooney were there. 26 goals and 11 assists since Southgate took over, including a World Cup Golden Boot. England are damn lucky to have him. Any other country would be celebrating his accomplishments, instead we have people bizarrely trying to belittle him.
Tossers.
