I think it best for both parties to move on.
I think if Alderweireld was tied down nobody would be hugely bothered if this was his last season. Will be 33 and already showing signs of decline. I’d be sad to see him go but recognise we need younger faster alternative. It’s just the fact of a double whammy with Alderweireld.

In all fairness, he's consistently been a bit of a week link when our managers have problems. Seem to recall him being less than the best example when things went bad under AVB and Sherwood. There's the suggestion that he's not at his best this season, too.
Captains have to be consistent leaders, and Kane has more about him in that way. I'm not sure (happy to be corrected) if I've ever heard evidence of Jan being the Maximus of the dressing room on any occasion.
Not a criticism, just highlighting observations and recollections.

I'd be hugely bothered. Toby is a class CB and his distribution is literally second to none in world football but for my money Jan is the better defender. Pace matters fuck all at CB when you're reading of the game is that good.
