She was referring to the Colosseum in Rome, i.e., an arena of gladiatorial intensity, not some bloody suburban auditorium somewhere called the Coliseum. Idiot journalist.

The reference to them being "on their knees" was about the financial non-viability of the project when lenders fled the market after the banking crash.

There's a fair amount of self-congratulatory spin there, but the narrative is basically correct.

And it's good finally to have confirmed what many of us thought, which is that £850m is the cost of the whole NDP, with the stadium itself accounting for 40%-45% of the total.

Is it plausible that 12 years ago, the Emirates was built for £390m, and despite the retractable pitch complications, 10 years of inflation, and a very tight timescale (=more overtime), we build a bigger stadium for potentially less?

Cheers for the article, it’s great. I especially remember this!

All of a sudden there’s focus from local regional and national government. We’d banged our heads against that brick wall for so long. Nobody would have spent money in an area that had no commitment from government to support infrastructure and transport.
"As soon as we had the riots everyone came back around the table and it was something we coulddo. We always wanted to stay in Tottenham."

Ordinarily I'd laugh & say no way BUT the Scum had Peter Hill-Wood as chairman we have Daniel Levy ..... it would not surprise me if this was actually true.

I'm pretty sure the £390m figure for the Emirates is analogous to the £850m figure for the whole NDP.

As I posted about a year ago (and someone quoted yesterday), journalists writing articles about development always compare the initial build cost with the final overall development cost. It's a way to make up stories about uncontrolled cost overruns.

So I think the figure for the Emirates includes all the housing, the public realm improvements and perhaps the residential development on the Highbury site.

Build costs in London have not increased vastly in the past 12 years. They've risen, but nothing like land values or sale prices of flats and houses. The financial crash put a major brake on the building industry, because buyers fled the market, and it took a few years to get back to where it was.

Looking at the event day info of all the transport etc. issued by the club, on page 19 why is the premium shuttle bus doing a scenic tour of South Tottenham down Crowland Road and through Markfield Park ?

Emirates £390m included property build which was £120m. And that is where they over stretched themselves.
