Guys we need to be realistic. No clubs are mandated to sell to us. Let's say de Ligt is available but at £70m, do you think he is value? Savic at £100m? Martial at £70m?

If the club's aren't willing to sell and interest is growing in those players then those values will get higher. Those windows of false promises have still got us on to an upward trajectory and champions league 3 years in a row.

That is far too sensible.

Fees being allegedly demanded for our reported targets are clearly way too high. People at the club are paid handsomely to identify options without the sound of barrels being scraped.

Our priority should be replacing any departing Belgians with the same quality.

Totally agree. But the one thing with Toby is the replacement shouldn't stop Sanchez's progression. He needs all the minutes to learn better positioning. He will be immense.

Dembele a tough one. Our midfield dynamics will change without him. We lose the power and gain more forward thinking or we maintain the power and lose the on ball ability. I can't think of another player like him.

Is all this negativity (and unfunny recycled clichés) and misery all just to do with Herc saying we are "interested in plea"?

Full on doom mode
I wouldn’t say it was doom & gloom, just fans feeling like it’s Groundhog Day. We are well aware there is plenty time left in window but ITK suggested deals would be early despite WC & that we have stepped up our bid in terms of the quality of players we are targeting. We are told Poch is being backed but the calibre of players we are being linked with doesn’t point to stepping up & making a statement.

Indeed, one post from Herc, which wasn't even a negative post, and yet everyone is spiralling down into a pit of despair.

Don't get me wrong, I have some concerns right now especially when you consider that this time next week there'll be only a month left of the window and we've made no signings........YET.

I think I even recall one of the ITK's saying if we've signed nobody by end of June then start to worry! HAHA!

Anyway, there's no point getting all doom and gloom. You can only judge a transfer window at the end of it so whilst it's fair enough to worry a bit, all the "Levy is screwing us over again" comments will look daft when we get some deals done.

World Cup year was always going to make things tricky but there's no way we go into next season without making some good signings. I would also reiterate the Plea has been one of the better players in Ligue 1 over the past few seasons (most likely recommended by Hitchin - as was Modric who very few had heard of back then) and isn't it a bit daft to be negative about a player if you've never seen him play and know nothing about him? Big names don't necessarily equal instant success but they do usually come with over-inflated price tags and we're still not, and might never be, in a position to compete at those crazy prices.

Let's just wait and see what happens and until then, try not to be all negative about it.

I totally understand the despondency on here this morning, however, just playing Devil's Advocate, there are occasionally posters who, when referencing players like Kante, Mahrez or Lanzini (for example) will say, 'What the hell were our scouts doing when these players were snapped up as unknowns?' Sure, Plea isn't the special signing that ITKs hinted at, but maybe Steve Hitchin sees something in him that Poch can really work with.

I hear this BUT we've been linked with all kinds of players, top level and lower level and as I've said above, big names dont necessarily equal success but they do tend to equal big fees.

The key for us is to still try and be smart about who we sign.

Too many fans are getting a bit snobby cos we've been linked with someone like Plea who is also being linked with West Ham etc. That's not the player's fault though is it? It's arguably because he is a talented player that is gettable due to who he plays for now. Ousmane Dembele was at Rennes when he was signed by Barca, Dybala was at Palermo. Granted they were younger but still, there is talent to be found that can make a difference for us.

Equally, we clearly want Martial but it's never gonna be a case of just bending over and paying what Utd want. I personally think it'll get done eventually but there's a lot of posturing going on atm.

I'm absolutely shocked. Never saw this coming. No sir.

I think regarding people's dismay, it's not that the penny pinching has not served us well - of course mainly relying on Poch's brilliance at building the club on budget - it has taken us very far, but not all the way. ITK seemed to clearly say that this season was the one we'd make the next step to help get us over the line with a change of tack.

I think if we kept the exact same squad for next year we will still do well, albeit slightly off the top. But it seems certain some big players will leave.. and perhaps to direct rivals.

I hear what you are saying & I’m all for uncovering gems that our coaches can work with but respected ITKs have stated big name signings & sounded confident. It didn’t come across that we would ‘try’ but strongly hinted they were done or almost done.

Looks like Plea = Martial Light from Herc's ITK. If it means we keep Toby I'm OK with that.

Agreed, and good point but hopefully that big name is Martial and we're still gonna be able to get it done. Finger crossed anyway.
