It’s it’s a good question but I don’t think it’s final.
Big teams have competition look at man city - no one says “don’t sign Sané because sterling will be unhappy”. They say - “look what strength in depth they have”.
If sterling wants to play he will bust a gut in training and compete. Same with Sané who comes knowing there’s competition for places but that the seasons long. As poch says - footballers get paid to train not to play matches.
Ensuring players play to their limit is an important reason to bring in quality - particularly in the forward positions where consistency is less important (like the gk - cb pairing combo). This is amplified for young players who are rapidly improving and someone like Alli will benefit greatly from the competition.
I’d also add that playing Son up front as cover for Kane and shifting Llorente would be a welcome move.
A big part of the financially doped clubs success is because they pay players much more to sit on the bench than their competitors could afford to pay them to play. That compensation seems to keep quite a few of them sweet, but we couldn't (and shouldn't) do it.
