It's Not pretty. How on earth can they be trusted to host a major tournament? Considering the bans and reformation English football went through back in the day. It's sad really. When you consider their politicians have even voiced their controversial pride at their hooligan prowess.

The usual argument against this (and it might actually be sound) is that Putin would have the lot of them shipped off to Siberia if they show Russia in a bad light. The old "don't shit on your own doorstep" approach. They were 'at it' again last night. Spartan Moscow fans clashed with Atalanta fans after their Europa League match and one policeman died after suffering a heart attack, as rival fans tried to kick and punch lumps out of each other as riot police tried to stop both of them.
Russian fans have history of behaving like a bunch of drunken apes. Who can forget the shameful scenes at the last Euro championships, where a bunch of English fans had the holy crap beaten out of them by a Russian mob, probably militarily trained, their disgusting behaviour amazingly endorsed by one idiot Russian politician, who was proud of it, and felt it right to say so publicly.
I fear for the safety of any fans, English or otherwise, travelling to Russia for the World Cup. I bet those thugs are already rubbing their hands with glee.

I'm not so sure it'll be an issue. Putin will have ordered that the paramilitaries at least have to be on their best behaviour, he doesn't want a scandal at his tournament.I fear for the safety of any fans, English or otherwise, travelling to Russia for the World Cup. Same way England were allowed to host a tournament in 1996, despite their fans shitting up every single tournament they've attended since the 70's.
The English have been the biggest exporters of this for decades. Every Euros or WC in Europe was incomplete without pissed up English fans smashing up bars, throwing cafe furniture around town squares and setting about any little bunch of people stupid enough to be "foreigners".
The only difference at the Euros in France was the English finally came up against a mob who were actually stronger and much better organised.
I'm not condoning it, I'm just saying it's a bit rich the English complaining about hooliganism o Russia being awarded the tournament, when they've generally been by far the biggest perpetrators of ruining the fun for everyone else for the last few decades.
And that suggestion by the Russian MP actually isn't as bonkers as it first seems. If firms are going to fight anyway, isn't it a better idea to organise it so it's away from the public, with no tools allowed and fair numbers etc ? It sound a bit barbaric, but is it any different to these cage fights and MMA fights that get shown on telly ? This is pretty much just the same, except instead of 1v1 it's 20v20.

They are not Russian special forces. They are members of Fighting Clubs attached to different football clubs. It's a popular movement in eastern European countries. They consider themselves an elite among the supporters. They don't drink, they go to Gyms, they fight between the firms in the woods etc. In fact, football for them is secondary. Their own performance is a prerogative. And part of ordinary fans are on the border, they try to copy some violent elements of the hardcore. You need to understand that there is strong propaganda of military past and present on Russian State TV. They are seriously getting ready for the war. Russian TV is full of violence. Kids are growing up with these ideas as normal behaviour since 90'sThese Russians are a different level. Training camps etc. Won't see much stone island on them that's for sure! They deserve everything they get. Using people's heads as footballs? Animals.
I'm not convinced they are any sort of Russian special forces though. Is there proof of that?
Your suggesting that an organised competitive sport, with timed rounds and a ref, with medical staff on hand is the same as letting rival gangs have a mass brawl?
Anyway letting Russia host the WC is an absolute stain on the sport.
No, I’m suggesting it’s a lesser of two evils.
Why is Russia having the WC any worse than say Brazil or England?
If morality is the benchmark for World Cup hosting it’s going to limit the options considerably.
Because it gives credibility to Putin's aggressive mafioso state. Why is Russia having the WC any worse than say Brazil or England?
