No-one sits at home and recounts the legendary tale of when Spurs came fifth, but they will remember beating Chelsea in the cup final until old age.
How many fans have a programme of our defeat to West Ham in 2005?
I'll guarantee it is a lot less than those that have kept this years CC final.
Get what you're saying, and not trying to underplay the significance of winning a Cup at all, but I think that with a bit of emphasis change your points could could be turned right around.
There might not be a 'legendary tale' of a 5th place finish in 2005/06, but many supporters will remember it as the turning point in our club's fortunes and the year we dragged ourselves up from the numbing mediocrity we'd suffered for more than a decade.
Equally, in 07/08, no one will ever forget the Carling Cup semis or the final (and rightly so), but those two games are the only things that people will hark back to in years to come; no one will want to reminisce fondly on the overall memory of underperforming on a staggering number of occasions throughout a largely disappointing season.
Personally, I will remember 05/06 much more fondly than 07/08, and I believe I'll also feel the same way in 10 and 20 years' time. That's just the way that I feel though. What I'm trying to say is that there are valid arguments for preferring any of the 3 seasons mentioned: to the neutral observer looking at the history books, 07/08 would appear to be the best season because we won something, but to those of us who are Spurs fans and lived through it, any of the 3 seasons is just as valid a choice as the others depending on the memories you retain of the way you felt back then.
