Read the posts above. The point is, Arsenal were expected to win a cup. Just because of their years of underachievement they still have a very strong squad, and so winning a trophy is the least that should have been expected, whereas I don't think anyone really thought Liverpool would even get top 4 let alone mount a title challenge. Liverpool completely exceeded their target whereas Arsenal only just matched theirs.

I have read the posts and get what people are saying but success in football is measured in winning trophies and medals not in expectations. Why people are shocked that Liverpool did so well is beyond me I thought they would finish top four this season and us 7th so I suppose we did better than expected.

That would be brilliant....but it still doesn't take away the fact that this season they won more silverware than Liverpool.

Yes but that doesn't necessarily mean they had a better season. I don't really care which subjectively had a better season but the word season implies that the question is 'who performed better over the last 9 months?'. Arsenal both won a cup and got in the CL but surely the point for top teams is to get closer to ultimately winning the league. Liverpool were very close, Arsenal were yet again never in the running at the end of the season.

If I were an Arsenal fan, I'd be content that we just about avoided two banana skins against Wigan and Hull and relieved we are back in the CL; but is there much glory in beating those teams in ET? For Liverpool, they played magnificently for large chunks of the season hammering decent teams and playing some wonderful football.

I measure success/failure as Obtained position(cups) - Expected Position(cups). Obviously, the type of the cup matters as well, but let's forget about that for the sake of the argument.

Therefore, I think think that Pool really overachieved this season.

I just find it sad that success is measured by what some expect you to do over what you have won . There are three domestic trophies up for grabs City won two and the Gooners the other. Did Liverpool over achieve? I don't think so it just proves those who thought they weren't going to do well were wrong.

Look at the Liverpool players after Palace match and the Gooners after the Hull final and ask them who they thought had the better season.

It's trophies on the roll of honour not how well you did because somebody thought you'd do worse.

During the season Liverpool. At the end of the season Arsenal.

Liverpool overachieved and were entertaining while doing it, but Arsenal are the ones with the trophy and the medals.

What's so hilarious about Liverpool's collapse is that what was an objectively successful season for them actually turned out to feel like abject failure. There's no telling what kind of psychological effect losing the title may have on them. Hopefully, for our sake, they'll still be feeling sorry for themselves next season.

As for Arsenal, I don't think I care. I prefer to console myself with the thought that their end of season success will actually do them more harm than good. If Hull had won, and Wenger had fell on his sword, then they may have got someone like Klopp in, or anyone willing to risk raising expectations by spending all that cash they have sitting in the bank. As it is, next season will be the same as ever for them. Probably get fourth, maybe fluke a domestic cup, but that's about it.

Change the question to who had the more successful seasons between 2005 & 2013 - us or Arsenal?
They finished top 4 every season and got into the CL, but didn't win any silverware. We won the Carling Cup......

Silverware over position??

Personally, I'd say Arsenal.

Winning the FA CUp and qualifying for the CL, is more successful than finishing 2nd in the league in my opinion.

Having said that, the league season Liverpool obviously were better... if that makes sense!

Some would say us as they were expected to get top four every year where as we weren't expected to get two top fours two fifth places an two cup finals. We did better than we should have and so have been better than them.

You also have to take in that 'pool didn't have European games to play making there season a bit easier.

The gooners had the better season. Just ask any gooner or bin dipper fans who is happier.

I'd easily take the FA Cup and 4th over finishing 2nd and blowing the chance to win the title.

Obviously Arsenal.

Both teams got into the CL but the Gooners won a trophy as well.

It's about end results though, nothing else into consideration over the finishing part and trophies.

Arsenal had the better season overall, liverpool performed better in league only.

In terms of success - Arsenal, because they won a trophy. Doesn't matter whether you finish 2nd or 4th in the league, you're still a loser and walk away empty handed. They're still in the CL for next season too. The only downside for them is that they were first for a fair while and blew it, but I don't think Arsenal fans ever really expected to challenge for the title anyway. Not the fans I know, they've become rather sceptical over the years.

Liverpool did really well though. They overachieved and surpassed exceptions. At the end of the day they also blew it as it was in their hands.

That is true. In terms of who is easier to wind up this year, it's without a doubt pool fans. The old '2nd place is just the first loser' line is a good'n

Put it this way, would rather be in Arsenal's position, with CL and a cup than Liverpool's CL. So Arsenal win for me.

People have got to stop pretending that winning a domestic cup has the value it once did (pre CL) or the value of "winning" a CL place. The CL, like it or not, is the biggest thing to happen to football since the Scottish invented passing the ball.

You play about 4 games to get to one and and 6/7 to get to the other, often against the dredges of the lower leagues.

To get to the kudos, prestige and financial treasure chest of the CL you have to out point your rivals over 38 games in one of the toughest leagues in the world.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying a cup final, especially if you happen to beat a fierce rival in the final, but it's not the same achievement as finishing in the first four or worth as much reward in kudos and actual money.
