5-Hutton right wing back, Bale Left wing back, Keane just behind front two of Bent and (insert Berby replacement). 3 centre backs, currently, Woody, King and Daws. As for the two centrol midfielders, two new signings, Poulsen and some other hard nut to boss the middle of the park.

Players not mentioned will be sold ie Lennon and Jenas, unless Jenas can play a hard tackling role in the middle.

New keeper also.

Dont you remember Hoddle trying that formation and failing miserably?

I think it went something like this:

-------------------Walker-------------------

------------King--Richards--Gardener--------

--Carr-------------------------------Ziege--

----- ----Anderton--Freund--Poyet----------

--------------Ferdidnand--Keane------------

I am not a fan of 3-5-2, but in fairness injuries meant that Hoddle almost never got to field a side that strong. More often we had the likes of Perry and Thatcher at the back with Taricco and Clemence as wing backs and Iversen and Armstrong up front. It might have been interesting to see if the system could have worked with the right players

As Eddie Bailey wrote, Hoddle rarely got to field a side that strong. But remember that Hoddle also bought Kanoute to play alongside Keane, and was sacked four days later. If this team hadn't been full of sicknotes (the entire back five plus Anderton), it could have played some great fluid football and been very successful.

Hoddle may not be the world's greatest man manager, but I still think he's a very good coach and, with a bit more luck, may have succeeded at Spurs.

Lets compare then,

-------------------Walker-------------------

------------King--Richards--Gardener--------

--Carr-------------------------------Ziege--

----- ----Anderton--Freund--Poyet----------

--------------Ferdinand--Keane------------

==================================

-------------------Robbo-------------------

------------Dawson--Woody--King----------

--Hutton-----------------------------Bale--

-------------Jenas--Zokora--Hudd----------

--------------Berbatov--Keane-------------

Personally I'd be tempted to fit Tainio into that midfield 3 but Ramos clearly prefers Zokora. Also, theres nowhere to fit Steed or Lennnon in here. Steed could go in the centre but who do you drop?

Stick Hudd in the back 3 instead of Dawson and then put Steeeeeeeed in midfield?

I think it would be more like:

-----------------GK----------------
-----------------------------------
-Hutton----Woody---King-----Bale-
-----------------------------------
---------Jenas-------Tiago---------
--------------Modric---------------
--Lennon--------------Keane/Steed/?
--------------Berba---------------

No. Bale is not very good at LB. He wasn't at Southampton. Hasn't been for Wales and the couple of times he's played there for us was not good either. He's a LM. Keane is not a left midfielder and neither is Malbranque. I'd rather have Malbranque on the right or even centrally in a 5. And I wouldn't have Keane anywhere in a 451. He's not a midfielder, he's not creative or industrious enough.

EB

I don't like 352 either.

To be honest I don't think a bid for Crouch would be as bad as we fear (I too was worried when we were linked the season Liverpool bought him). He would make an effective fulcrum for either a 451 or the Kanoute type role in a 442. His technique is good (better than Bent) and his scoring record is pretty god as well. If your going to play with wingers he's ideal. I also think Kuyt could do a similar job in both formations. Neither have wonderfull vision but finding a Kanoute or Berbatov is going to be almost impossible. They are the next best thing and can play both roles. In Peckhart we may already have a similar player ??

Dunno about 'pacy wingers' but a couple of decent wing-backs could allow us to play a kind of 3-5-2 formation.

Like the rest of it, though, it needs the right mix of players. Keane, for example, has the ability to play in a deep role, but seems to lack the discipline to do it consistantly well.

Would a midfield '5' allow for both Thudd & Keane, or do we need more strength in midfield? (I happen to think we do!)

If we have five across the middle, are we then looking for a player to run the channels?? If so, we have Bent.......

It's going to be an interesting summer, that's for sure, but before then, I want to see us winning a game or 3!

I'm pretty sure Ramos will get the players in to make 442 work.. He's unsure about Lennon's capability, and he knows we need a left winger (a real one).. I'm also sure he knows we need a Poulsen type player, a GK, and another strong CB.. I think he also sees the need for a good left back.. Jenas has proved he can do the box to box midfield role, and maybe he can be turned into a Viera type player... So i think he'll be in Ramos' plans..

I am also an advocate of the 4-3-3 system from my previous threads but for us to play it,we would possibly need another 4 outfield players(presuming Berbatov leaves).
I really don't think Lennon or Malbranque would flourish in that system -we could certainly play Bale on the attacking left side but is Gilberto really a marauding full back, not so sure.Lennon although he is very quick really does'nt possess enough quality in his passing. We would also need a new striker and another midfielder!

You mean like this?

-------------------------McGregor------------------------

--------------------------Thudd--------------------------

-----------------Woody------------Ledders---------------

--Hutton-------------------------------------------Bale--

--------------------------Gattuso------------------------

----------------Jenas----------------O'Hara--------------

----------------Keane -----------------Berbs-------------

Thats going back to the old 'Hoddle' formation. I like the idea of the Hudd as sweeper though. Wasn't there some quote from Jol saying he'd be an awsome sweeper and comparing him to Beckenbauer or something?

yeah, sorry, thats exactly what i meant..I think with Woody and Ledders infront of him Thudd would be a great sweeper.. When he played CB for a couple of games he reminded me a bit of Koeman, great vision and passing from the back out, gives us another dimension if needed.. That formation also allows us to compete defensively with the Man Utd/Arse/Chelsea formations where they quite often end up with 5 men running at you.. I think its a lot stronger than the Hoddle formation as Hutton and Bale are initially full backs who like to get forward.. With a Gattuso type player there too, that would really tighten us up.

When we had something to play for our 442 out played Chelseas, Arsenals and UTD's 5 man against liverpools 5 man midfield. The majority of our poor defeats are down to us being rubbish, nothing to do with the system. I think he'll absolutely play with 2 wingers and 2 forwards. I think perhaps if Berbatov goes he'll possibly replace him with more of a N.10 like Modric or Riquellme or Diego etc but it'll essentially be 4 forwards, 2 holders, 4 defenders and a goalie.

Just for a laugh why don't we go 2-5-3, all out attack a la Ardiles
----------------------robbo-----------------

------------King-------------Woodgate-------

Hutton--------------Hudd---------------------Bale

---------Jenas------------------Modric---------

---Bent/Lennon------------Berbatov-----------Keane

That should put the cat amongst the pidgeons, remember those ardiles days of 5-4 and 4-3 games, what excitement although not productive
