I have to admit that Crook’s “team of the week “ on the beeb site is probably the most meaningless and inconsequential piece of “journalism“ I’ve ever had the rough luck to read. Staggeringly, it’s been going on for years.
Totally agree. The BBC used to have comments for his team of the week, but they were so scathing on Garth Crooks they removed it. The BBC should get rid of team of the week or replace Garth.

To be fair, those other sports give a lot more time to stats and analysis because the games are traditionally stop/start with lots of time for the pundits to pad out the breaks with information like that whereas Football is almost continious from start to finish bar half time so the pundits focus on commentating on whats happening and how to describe it rather than provide any deep dive on the style, tactics, strategy plays etc.
Sorry but that’s bullshit. Football broadcasts have dedicated 30-60 minutes for pre and post match analysis for decades. Pundits of old used to have prepared something meaningful to say in those periods - not just on what we saw but how and why it happened. We shouldn’t give today’s pundits a free pass for continuing to fill that time with narrow minded cliches and other bollocks which is no more insightful than you can hear Big Mouth Barry spouting down the pub when he’s 6 beers deep.

I actually worked at Setanta back in the day. I did I brief stint on the golf team and I would prepare a fact/stat sheet for the on air comms.

For the football, you’d see the commentator and co-coms at a computer doing their research (I actually saw Chris Waddle at my usual spot and was going to ask him to move until I realised it was him!!).

So yes, I imagine Sky have a team of researchers and pundits should get in early to go through it/do their own. Who knows if they actually do though.
It feels obvious sometimes which ones don’t do any research. Jamie Redknapp seems like he just reads Paul Merson’s column and say “fuck it that’ll do” or relies on things he heard from a few seasons ago!

People wanting accuracy, fairness, balance and knowledge. Here. On a site who's members routinely fail to display it themselves :D Some of the bollocks posted on here makes TV pundits look like encyclopedias of the game.

Kidding aside, people are never going to get all the stuff they claim to want. Sky don't give a fuck, none of the broadcasters do, it's popcorn. A game starts, it finishes, they waffle on about it and shout 'next!' The conveyor belt of games rolls on. They couldn't give a fuck about flashing out a one liner with balance to satisfy the injured sensibilities of a fan, it's 'The is what Paul Merson thinks' (or whoever) not 'This is researched, accurate and balanced' and as for research.......... Do me a fucking great big lemon. The logistics of that alone preclude it ever happening. The audience must number squillions all over the world, and they all tune in, week in, week out, regardless of the lack of accuracy or balance or whatnot, nobody, literally nobody cares about all this shit. The money rolls in. If you're not happy with it, you'd do yourselves a massive favour by not watching it if it's that bad ;)

There, that's poked at stick at it :woot:

It’s not journalism. It’s a dartboard.

ITV4 are rerunning some Saint & Greavsie programmes off and on at the moment. Better than 99% of the shit that’s out there at the moment inbetween games.

I see Darren Bent endeared himself a little bit more to us by picking a combined Arsenal/Tottenham 11 of 100% Goons.

Even Sandra wouldn't have done that.

No, but Martin Keown would (and did so in 21/22 season).

The worst part about Keown's effort was that he didn't do it to recognise the better (or in-form) players in each position, he picked 100% gooners to "support the lads". Like, yeah, that's the point of the exercise, Martin, you absolute legend.

Martin keown is thick as pig shit so it’s no surprise he didn’t comprehend the exercise. Darren bent genuinely believes his XI of bumenal players is the right call, when in fact he couldn’t be more incorrect. I find that even more abhorrent and I wish we could discard that used condom of a player from our history, if not from humankind’s history.

You're telling me what you think should be happening and I'm telling you what is actually happening.

So no it's not bullshit. You may not like it but it's the reality

I don’t get rattled by him but you make it sound like Darren Bent did something noteworthy in our colours. He didn’t. He won a medal with us but was an unused substitute in the final. He scored only 18 league goals for us across 2 seasons which ranks below Iversen, Armstrong and - despite all his injuries in his time with us - it ranks below Les Ferdinand.

He wasn’t good enough for us. Can he put “played for Spurs” on his CV? Yes. Is he part of our club’s history? Is he fuck.

In fact, I see a delicious irony in the fact that he’s a massive Gooner and the peak of his career achievements is a medal won at Spurs that he contributed sod all towards.

N.B. Not intended to read as a pop at you @nferno - rather to reassure that he’s already been discarded from Spurs’ history.
