What the pundits & media are saying about us

"They should get past Tottenham in the quarter-finals, although Tuesday's first leg at Spurs' new stadium will be a big occasion and it is going to be tough for them."

I don't think that's overly dismissive. City have won three matches in a row against us, including two away from home. We've got a single point from our last five league matches against Top 6 opposition. They got 100 points last season, are on course for another title, while we're scrambling for a Top 4 spot. They certainly should get past us and it would count as an upset if they don't. Maybe we should spend less time acting like Scousers looking for media conspiracies which don't exist just because we're too defensive to accept the fact that we're coming up against a much better team. And more time being happy to cheer our side on regardless, hope for an upset, but expect only a strong and committed performance.

I more disagreed with his dismissal of Juventus as a threat. A side with so much more know how and plenty of world class players with a tactically sound defensive base. Our media annoyed Juve in the build up to our match can see why now..

Why Lionel Messi is Pep Guardiola and Man City's biggest problem - Alan Shearer - http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47845335
I sincerely hope we beat City and it's Spurs facing Messi in the final. I'd love to prove his 'analysis' wrong.....here's hoping.

Pundits are useful for explaining the technicalities of the game- even in giving opinions at the end of a game. As en ex hockey player I have learned a lot from them. However without exception, none of them have been any sort of good record in their predictions. Indeed, it is not unusual for them to disagree on outcomes. They talk and think theoretically. They might know their football theory, but they show little understanding or real life. I am well aware in reality the non favourite often beats the hot favourite. In any one cup season it happens regularly in every round. If anyone had the ability to predict they would win the pools every week.

I don't think anyone takes any pundit prediction seriously. We were written off after 3 matches this year but look what happened with us? I am not suggesting we are going to be holding up the Cup in May, but we have as much chance as anyone and I will continue hoping until all hope is gone.

Of course Citeh are favourites. They seem to have our number atm and we've not been on great form/bit unlucky and they are playing well. Still I'm glad we are facing them at WHL first as I'd fear the game could be beyond us if we'd played at their yard first. I still think we might just sneak a win first leg but I fancy them to beat us at theirs

Other than the new stadium there's no reason why we would beat them, especially over two games. Hope we can perform well as underdogs.

I agree with shearer. We are the underdogs here. We have not improved this season, our team has if anything got worse.

I felt last season like we could beat anyone. Now there is no ifs and buts about it. City are better than us and should beat us and comfortably over two legs.

But it's football and you never know. One thing is definite we need Winks and dier back.

So let's see what your total aggregate score is then please. I'll put on my rose tinted spectacles and predict....
Home leg win 2-1
Away leg draw 1-1
Spurs go through 3-2.....yeah !! sorted...(y)

I felt the same. I was at Juve and the FA Cup semi last season and both matches after the whistle i felt shell shocked because i was so confident we would win.

Until that inexplicable 5 match run picking up only 1 point from 15, there was a lot of positivity on this forum. With the implosion of confidence currently around, that appears to suggest the time prior to those fatal 5 games is now thought by some on here as that we were either lucky or punching well above our weight. I don't believe either to be true. I think we were very good, deserved our success and still are a very good side.

For the Champions League games, quite rightly, many have us as the underdogs - their squad contains a plethora of talent far exceeding ours. The likelihood of City going through may be right but not necessarily a certainty. I don't want to second guess the result but, if we can have one of those cracking games we are capable of and get a decent result in the home match, that will put a lot of pressure on City. As their squad is so good they have rarely, if ever, had to play under pressure this season - they are not exactly practised in it. So fingers crossed for a decent first leg and let's see what City are really made of.

To Hell with Shearer's views. Two months ago he was praising us to high Heaven and as genuine title contenders. He no longer has the courage if his convictions and bases most of his views using hindsight.

The thing that concerns me in these big vital games unfortunately is Hugo Lloris finding a way to cock up and Eriksen hiding.

In fairness, we did have quite a lot of luck to be in such a good position at that point. In three of the four games before the nightmare run we scored late goals to win when we didn't really deserve to against much weaker opposition in Fulham away and Watford and Newcastle at home. In a ten-game league run from Man United on the 13th of January until Liverpool at the end of March, the only game where we put in an acceptable performance and won without needing a late goal was Leicester, at the same time as we went out of both domestic cups. While we'd had a good first half to the season, things really did go very poorly after that as had been widely predicted given our World Cup fatigue, lack of signings or squad depth, and many players with pre-existing injury concerns.

The hope, of course, is that the new stadium reinvogarates us, helps the players find that extra reserve of energy they didn't know they had, and that we go out and smash City tomorrow to stand a solid chance of going through on aggregate. But that is just a hope rather than a realistic expectation. Stadium moves rarely pay such immediate dividend, and we've got very clear underlying issues rather than simply poor luck of late. The more realistic expectation is that we give it a good go tomorrow, and probably more importantly that a slight stadium boost is enough to see us get past the remaining teams we have to face at home in the league and help us just about glide into 3rd spot on the basis of our early-season success. And then, of course, a much-needed reinvigoration over summer.

This tie is what it is, give our all and if we do somehow get through, then result!

We are clear underdogs in this tie, we can’t compete with their spending, it’s the difference. Take away their owners and they’d be fighting it out with West Ham for 12th. Everyone knows that

This City side absolutely have our number at the moment too. We don’t give them much of a game of late. Styles make fights and all that, we are not set up to cause them too much grief.

I just want 100%, no stupid, stupid mistakes and come off the pitch knowing the boys couldn’t have done anymore, no matter what the result.

It’s football and upsets do happen, often. COYS!
