Major League Soccer has finally settled on an opponent for its all-star game in Toronto this summer, and the Star has learned it will be English Premier League's West Ham United.
The game, which marks the second time in three years the MLS all-stars will face an English team, takes place July 24.

MLS first drifted away from the traditional intra-league all-star game format in 2001, when its all-stars played the U.S. national team. Since then, all but one all-star game has featured a team of MLS standouts against a team from overseas.

Last summer, the MLS all-stars defeated Celtic in Denver, and in 2006 Scarborough's Dwayne De Rosario scored the only goal in the MLS all-stars' 1-0 win over Chelsea.

The league announced last year that Toronto would host the 2008 all-star game, and the deal with West Ham, currently in 10th place in the 20-team Premier League, ends rumours linking teams like Liverpool and Newcastle.

This proves that the people behind the MLS know sod all about football.

How do you go from Celtic, Chelsea and possibly Liverpool to West Ham?

I can see the adveritising now.

'Come on down to Toronto this summer to watch the below average league All-nobodies take on the 10th (if that) best team in England that most people outside the UK have only heard because Bobby Moore played for them a bloody long time ago.

So come on down and watch us set football in the USA back 25 years.'

MLS + West Ham = Oh for the love of God, someone please put me out of my misery.

It must be our revenge for the whole American War of Independence. It also sends a message to Australia and New Zealand. Would you reject the Queen as your head of state if it meant having to watch Wigan, Bolton or West Ham play?

The state of New Zealand football is actually improving and this is mainly to do with how the A-League is performing. Now that Wellington look set to have a long-term future in the league I'm sure the standard of the New Zealand team will increase over the years.

No it is not. The standard of the NZFC is getting worse, the FA is on the brink of collapsing under its excessive debt and it has nothing to do with the A-League. Only a handful of NZ players play for the Wellington team and they also have the uncommon problem of having NZ's No 1 and 2 GK's playing for the same club, which means that one of them is getting no game time all season. The young NZ players that Wellington have to sign aren't getting any game time and there isn't a youth or reserve league for the Wellington side as they are not allowed into the Australian reserve league.

I have to say I didn't know about Wellington not being allowed into the Australian reserve league, which is a stupid idea.

The NZFC is still a young league and it is going to take time for it to produce talent. Over 30,000 turned up to watch Wellingon play LA Galaxy, so maybe Beckham's appearance will bring in some new youngsters that would have normally taken up a different sport like it has in the US.

The quality in the national team is slowly improving. Ryan Nelsen is, obviously, the best player they've got but they now have players that are at clubs like Celtic, Sunderland, etc., so that will help them.

Also the NZ Under 20s played rather well against Portugal in the U20 World Cup last year, shame about the Gambia result though.

As for the FA's debts, weren't they going to put a $10 levy on all playing members to raise $1m?

Why don't they just ask for a game between LA Galaxy and the national team? Its a win-win situation. LA want to milk Beckham until he retires and people turn up in mass to watch him so the FA will make a lot of money. They can also continue to get loads of money from FIFA.

NZFA: Excuse me, regional associations, we happen to have spent more money than we earnt, so can you please get all your members to pay us $10 each.
Regional Boards: Fuck off!
NZFA: Ok sorry to bother you.

the reason the phoenix are not allowed to have a reserve team play in australia is simply down to the fact (and this is not aussie bashing, it is the known reason) australia don't want to have to spend money on developing nz talent.
