Messi has just hit his 70th goal of the season, utterly incredible season, is this the pinnacle for him? Can he get better?

The best thing about Messi is it's not just the goal tally however incredible that is, he's chipped in with 16 assists too and his passing stats are excellent as well - for the stat nerds (hi Sloth) he runs at 84.3% pass completion averaging 63.8 passes a game. All round genius.

Oh, the 71st has just gone in.

I was typing the opening post quickly before he goes and gets 80!

Yeah that was a great touch that.

It's a fucking joke. If we had half of Messi we'd win the league...

I do wonder if the new "20 a goal season" striker will soon be replaced with "50 goal a season" striker with the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, KJH etc all banging em in freely.

By the time we catch up and grab a 20 goal a season striker, we'll all be wanting that 50+ goal a season striker :(

Congratulations to Messi though, fantastic season and a shame they didn't get the CL. How can he top 72 goals now? Him and Ronaldo have been another level this season.

I'd be willing to bet there will be a 100 goal a season striker before we get a fucking 20 goal a season striker.

Can't see this happening - I think Messi and Ronaldo are "one-off's"; unbelievable what they've done this year.
It's about time we had a striker notching up a decent tally - who are our recent 20-goals-a-season men?

I dunno, even the likes of Falcao, Cavani, Llorente are all hitting late 20s, 30s now. It seems goals are flying in more now, we just need a clinical finisher, Adebayor is good but I do think we need Ade + one more.

Seeing Pep's goodbye from the Nou Camp was truly moving.

All that left to be said is gracias Pep.

Maybe it's because we don't see many partnerships anymore? Almost every side plays with one out and out front forward. Messi and Ronaldo can't be included. They are bonafide great players. Messi quite possibly the greatest.

I'm not sure I managed 70 goals in the playground at school during an academic year, and I was pretty prolific! Messi is the ultimate playground player, loves the game, smile on his face and is just redefining football as we knew it.

Similarly Pep has changed football, revolutionised it. I love managers like Mourinho but ultimately Jose will never be remembered for changing the way the game was played, Pep has, He saw his type of player become redundant and he went on a mission to revive it.

That's a good point about partnerships - no more Shearer and Sutton, Yorke and Cole, Owen and Fowler, Crooks and Archibald, etc.

Adebayor and Damiao, perhaps Adebayor and Rossi could work.

Europe is having a period at the moment which is seeing some ridicukously prolific forwards, obviously Messi and Big Ron, but Gomez, Huntelaar, RVP etc, it's astonishing really. Not long ago there was often only 1 man to stumble over the 20 goals mark for the season, remember Marcus Stewart the league's 2nd top scorer with 19 goals?

I often wonder how Lineker would fare in today's game. Falcao-esque perhaps?

Not for at least 10 months.
