There have been a number of articles in the press today talking about the iligality of posting football highlights on Vine and I think its leads to some interesting discussions, not least about how the PL and Sky will chose to approach these issues. Will they view this as a battle to be fought or will they accept that there is a massive demand for their product that drives the 'piracy' and offer some alternative cf Netflix.

Streaming has been around for a while, where fans can be the consumers of illegally acquired live football matches but with the improvement in technology fans can now be the source of the illegal content. With this crowd sourcing of highlights it should be pretty easy to find clips on the internet without waiting for traditional highlight shows or the, now paid for, clips offered by the sun/times and this is a worry for the companies that have splashed out money on the rights.

My overwhelming feeling is that this very much resembles the piracy battles that the music and film industries have faced over the last decade. My hope is that the football industry looks at how these industries have tries to tackle the issue and realise that the problem actually represents an opportunity and not a battle to be fought. Surely its a road to making all the PL games available live? I sadly think this will not be the case, at least in the short term.
