Tottenham have made Burnley’s Nick Pope their first choice to replace Hugo Lloris if he leaves this summer. Goalkeeper and captain Lloris will have a year left on his Tottenham contract at the end of the season and, despite coming in for criticism after recent mistakes, received emphatic backing from manager Jose Mourinho last week.

Very solid goalkeeper, home grown, 8-10 years left in him. Makes sense if you want to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer.

He's 28 and you think he has 10 years left in him? Does that mean that in fact Hugo isn't past it, but still have 5-7 years left and is having a bad run?

Doesn't make sense to me, we should be looking for a longer term younger replacement if Hugo leaves, not a 2-4 year stopgap.

Well maybe 7-8 years then, it's perfectly normal to assume that a goalkeeper can be a very useful regular starter until 35-36 years old. After that he can stay around for a couple of years as back-up.

So our current keepers have a good 4-5 years left in them then?

What I'm saying is that Pope could very well be first choice until 2028/2029, not only a couple of years as you seem to suggest. After that he can even stay around as back-up.

Goalkeepers are completely different from strikers and most midfielders in that regard, zero reason to assume that Pope will be done in 3/4 years.

Depends, players peak at different times.

Pope's current trajectory is that he's either at his peak or still getting better where as Lloris and Hart are past their peak.

Yes it is likely Hugo will have a few more years left at the top level, and this is indeed just a bad run, but who knows. The question of him leaving, unless his form doesn’t show signs of improvement, is probably up to him.

Hugo is 34, which is old even for a goalkeeper. I would say 5 years is absolute maximum but most likely 2 or 3, though 34 is the end for many goalkeepers.

Pope is 28, that’s not a 2-4 year stop gap, that’s 6 seasons difference which is a lot. Lloris has been here much longer than anyone really expected, 4 years or more is already a considerable amount of time. Pope fits the bill perfectly and is a good goalkeeper, possibly not the best option, but certainly one of the safest options.

My point is that if our current keepers have a good few years left in them, why would we spend £30m on another keeper?
If Hugo wants to leave then that's a different story, and Pope is a keeper I like. But the "narrative" around these parts recently is that Hugo is past it (he's only 4 years older than Pope), so by that logic we'll get around 4 years out of Pope before he's past it too.

Personally I would rather Hugo stay until he retires. When will we start backing our players who have given us many years of exemplary service?

EDIT: It seems I have youth'ed Hugo and he's 2 years older than I thought. Ignore me, I need a spliff.

I agree but I don’t know where we will find the £30m if it’s going to be one in and one out as expected. PSG aren’t going to spend much on Hugo with only a year left and at his age. Unless Poch does us a favour of course. Maybe we can chuck sissoko in as a BOGOF deal and hope they don’t notice!

But he is my choice. Only gripe I have is experience at the very top level is lacking.

Well some sites reckon us and dortmund want to sign henderson from utd. He's just signed a 5 year deal recently. Utd would be best to get rid of de gea and have henderson as your number one for the next 10 years.

I reckon we could prise Kepa from Chelsea, we might even make money out of it...

To adapt my post from another thread, he's going through a bad spell but even at his peak he has too many flaws. He produces some magnificent saves, but he makes too many errors, NEVER leaves his box and his distribution is poor. I doubt anyone better than us would want him, but he'd also be hard to improve upon. It's a marriage of convenience at this stage. Not sure I've seen enough from Pope to suggest he's a significant upgrade when it comes to mobility. But I think trying to find someone better is fast becoming essential.

Nick Pope would be a very good choice to replace Hugo but 30m seems a lot, especially if we have a restricted budget.

Cheaper options could be Gulacsi (£10m release fee and HG), Maignan (contracts expires 2022), Onana (contrsct expires 2022 but currently banned for a year), Johnstone (WBA relegated), Raya Martin (if Brentford don't get promoted) and Areola (Part Ex with Lloris).

We probably need 2 keepers as well, I do not want Hart as 2nd choice next season but he is a perfect back up to the back up. Freddie Woodman at Swansea looks a good keeper, currently on loan from Newcastle.

Ideally we should get a home grown keeper as it's better to keep non-HG spots for outfield players IMHO. Pope fits that bill at least

He's a lot older than I thought he was.
