Game changed when Lamela came in, not because of Kane went out.
Lamela - 2 fouls in 2 minutes - no tocuhes on ball.
WHat happenned ? Stoke start sending men forward, they put in set pieces, then they get some throw ins & then they get some corners. Then be go back & back & back and give more space for Ireland. End result, goals were inevitable.

Lamela - just handed the momentum to Stoke in a plate & served the ball to them.

I am just done with that bloke

Bottom line is this result was completely avoidable.
The thing is Stoke could make that claim too. They didn't show up in the first half or it would have been a completely different game (look at last season). They were also missing two of their best players in Bojan and Shaqiri.

We're just not very good, that's the bottom line.

Disagree. We had lost the impetus when Kane was still on the pitch. Them scoring was an inevitable product of our surrendering the ball to them and giving them the impetus and a handle on the game.

The problem is all mental. We got lackadaisical when we started the second half and had very good chances to score, and then when they got the penalty, we lost our heads and the approach to the game.

Are we fit enough? Given that we pressed very well in the first half, and they barely touched the ball, we should have had enough in the tank to continue to press throughout the 90 and keep the ball when we had it. It was that simple.

If we had lost the impetus when Kane was on the pitch , it's at that point you sub him for his direct replacement and we go again. It was a massive cockup and a direct result of our transfer window approach. I also feel an older experienced head would have had a better chance handling the last ten minutes post stokes first goal.

the minute we lost Kane, and took off Mason, we lost all energy, and shape. fair do's with Kane slight knock, but Mason was busy, Bentaleb didn't get moving. unfortunately Lamela got to busy conceding free kicks, and 2nd half where was Eriksen.

Terrible game management. There's a massive difference between putting a game to bed and putting a game to sleep. If you try the latter - kill the tempo, concede possession - you end up losing the initiative and start to leak chances. Daft.

After the decent first half it just shows how we don't have any established leaders after Kane was brought off. Vertonghen who you could argue should be (a vice captain!) was disappointingly not one today and also Lloris himself. This game really showed how a young squad has many drawbacks.

That sort of game is even more concerning than us not turning up at all and getting beat 1-0. It's not a question of needing to hit our stride or having had a bad day at the office. It's psychological and tactical frailties that saw us beat today, and those don't disappear quickly.

I don't think you can really blame the lack of signings for today's result (although this window has been weak as piss incoming-wise in my opinion). I feel a little sorry for N'Jiee because a lot is resting on his shoulders now. He's the only attacking player we've signed in two years, so if he's not performing to a good standard quickly them he'll seem to many another bargain basement buy that's not improving the fist XI.

When you're 2-0 up against a mid-table side in the first home game of the season with 15 minutes to go and don't pick up three points, it's either a freak result or the sign of something rotten. Let's hope it's the former.

Roll on the next game. It's bordering on a must win for Poch, which is scary at this stage of the season.

I swear Phil Thompson is a jinx.

Every time he does our game for Sky we fuck up. Remember West Brom and Norwich, both on quite a few occasions.

Fucker is willing them on to.

I commented on the Lamela thread last week that the guy is a total and utter liability, playing him is like having 10 players on the pitch. Plenty came on here saying I was wrong, today more proof the guy is a joke. Gives away foul after foul, loses possession and brings zero to the team.

FFS sell him now

Look at what Stoke were able to bring off the bench today. They have a better squad than us for sure. Not having a striker on the bench 2nd game in is criminal. Great start to the season.

I agree it is criminal that we only have one striker available but we were supposed to be the better organised team as we have had last season with virtually the same players and apparently Poch has spent the pre season break concentrating on training and tactics with these same players. Its just as well Stoke didnt turn up in the first half as we have no idea what to do when the opposition attack and press us.

What we lack, more than anything, is that killer instinct you need to put a game away. We were far too lackadaisical in the second half against a team that never quit.

Exactly what I thought when he was playing. He does nothing for us. Nothing.

Dembele played pretty well today. Were lots of occasions where he looked up for a striker after skinning a couple of players to find Chadli thinking he was a winger still.

Read that Kane was injured. We don't have to put Lamela on if we had a backup striker that has yet to be bought. That's on Levy not getting in our Striker targets and going into the season with only Kane, leaving our manager with limited options.
