Great game but weren't they a bunch of whiners!
Just watched the first pen on TV having got back from the game. How could they complain about that? The guy threw Crouch to the ground and landed on top of him.

Crouch clearly DDT'd him.

Doubt it. as I said on the other thread:

He pushed his arms back, but they were waist height. The only reason the Twente player got caught in the face is because he was in the process of scything studs-up straight through his calf muscles.

I hate to be the bearer of good news, but we played fucking well, and if VDV had stayed on would have scored plenty from open play.

I thnk he will be in trouble. It was a deliberate piece of retaliation and the look on his face showed it. He was very lucky to not be red carded.

bizarrely enough i thought we played better when we went down to 10, and that seemed to spark life into T'hudd and Pav as well who i would have pulled at half time, but was quality 2nd half

I wouldn't underestimate the effect the third peno had on twente. I think at 2-1, half an hour to go, against 10 men they would've fancied their chances

Anyone else liken Pav's 2nd half performance to that of Berbatov's against Bolton a few seasons back after Keano got sent off? Proved he can play as a lone front-man with enough support.

Seriously, are you being serious?

Pav was largely anonymous throughout apart from one or two touches and the penalties. I actually thought the penalties were poor as well, not emphatic by any stretch of the imagination,

Pav is a poacher, nothing more. He finishes (sometimes) and that is it. Berbs was much more of an alround player and that Bolton match was one of the best performances i have ever seen by a striker in a Spurs shirt. Pav today was a 5 at best.

Really good win tonight! Apart from for ten minutes after we scored the second goal thought we played really well tonight and deserved the win! Twenty were so dirty diving all over the place and the keepers antics & also some of there players antics were disgraceful! The way the keeper acted he was lucky to stay on the pitch! Vdv penalty was poor though right height for keeper to save it after that I thought he lost his head abit! His goal was other end from me bit been told or was special! He is a class above most of our players at the club! Shame he got sent off but could see it coming said to the guy who sits next to me early in the second half after we had gone2-0 up Harry should have taken him off then as could see he would end up getting sent off.

Credit to pav for the two penalties but apart from that I thought he had awful game kept losing the ball and falling over! But as other people have said it took bottle to take those two pension Crouch was poor as well! Been told by mate who watched game on tv the hudd was lucky not to get sent off in first half for elbow. We deserve some luck as haven't had alot of it recently'

As said earlier though thought we deserved win were the better team! Hopefully we can build on this display!

Up until the first penalty, I thought Pav was poor, very poor actually. Afterwards, I though he looked pretty good if I'm honest. I've long noticed this, he's a good striker when he has confidence. He can hold it up, control the ball, pick a pass and run at defenders with the ball, even if he is slow as fuck. However, why he can't play like that before he scores is beyond me. He has to be the most confidence based striker I've ever seen.

VDV made two silly tackles and was a bit aggressive all night, but considering that the ref wasn't even facing the event when he made the first tackle, I think it was a soft booking based on the over the top rolling around of the Twente player. Also, their number 15 made at least 5 tackles worse than either VDV challenge and got away with just a booking tonight. Not impressed.

All the furore about the penalties, I just don't get it. The first one, we always see strikers penalised for pushing, so why should a defender get penalised for the same thing just once? The second penalty, he touched Bale, not the ball, Bale went down. If that was Stevie Gerrard or Wayne Rooney, they'd have been praised for their professional play, but a Welshman who plays for Spurs, and they jump on his back. The last penalty, I don't care if there was a lack of intention. Pavlyuchenko hit a good shot, it was goal bound, and it struck the guys elbow. Had it not, who knows how the shot would have ended up. All I know is that hit arms were not by his side, his elbow was raised so high it was level with his face at the time of incident, and it was a goalbound efford. Definite penalty in my opinion.

I though we started a little nervously, but after Gomes made that good save from the one on one, and King made that great run forward with the ball, we gained confidence and dominated possession. For all the Twente chances, I don't actually remember another dangerous effort they had barring the aforementioned, and the eventual goal. We, on the other hand, had the ball crossed into their area so many times that had our strikers been sharper we'd have won the game by half time.

Oh, and I thought we defended very well when we had to. They all stayed on their feet, closed down all shots and protected our goal very well. And I thought, after a sloppy opening to the match, Huddlestone dramatically improved, defended superbly, carried the ball forward very well and hit some lovely passes. He's not got the mobility of a Modric or VDV to play high up the pitch, but as an anchor, if he plays like he did tonight, I'm delighted.

Good win, put a bit of fear of Spurs into other sides in the CL hopefully, and despite what some would have us believe, definitely a deserved level of comfort with the result. Shame about VDV, especially being banned for Inter away, but tonight is a good night and hopefully this gives us the confidence to carry this form into our important league game this weekend.

Oh, and gotta love the lucky shirt.

Are we just the entertainers of the Champions League or what? Another great game tonight. Full of drama.

Gotta love how fired up VDV was aswell. Silly red card, but it's great to see that passion. I've seen Rooney sent off a few times like that but it wouldn't stop the fans loving him because he's such a great player.

Great win tonight. We got the bit of luck we've deserved of late. The work rate was excellent. COYS!

I think we're one of the most entertaining teams around, full stop. It's not always a good thing, as it pretty much means that we can be 3-1 up with 5 mins to go, and still have most of our fans biting their nails, but I'm glad that this strange trait of ours has carried itself on into Europe's top competition.

I really wouldn't be surprised to see us beat Inter at the San Siro, then lose to Werder at home and Twente away!

Oh, and gotta love the lucky shirt.

the second penalty Bale played for, but they get given, the third was very harsh, because it woul've struck him in the face or the body. Similar could've been said for Crouch's handball, in our box.

The timing of it also, was very lucky, and really decided the game. Had it gone on for longer at 2-1, I wouldn't have fancied us to hold out. As it was, they were knocked a little by that.

They had a few chances in the Game. One where Gomes didn't get a strong enough punch on the ball and their player hit hight and wide, with only King on the 6yd box to beat. They missed another good headed chance, from about 8 yards, and I think de Jong missed a golden opportunity, when he took down a ball over the top beautifully, turned either King or Bassong, and then fluffed a left footed shot with only the keeper to beat from 6yds. There was also the 1-on-1, which Gomes did well to save, but most strikers would have been expected to score.

Don't get me wrong, it was a superb win, especially down to 10 men, and we played pretty well - vdV is clearly awesome, despite being a bit rash. I think the 4-1 score line is very flattering, especially seeing as how we were awarded 3 penalties, one of which was very soft. I don't think our problems have magically disappeared, and we could well struggle agiants Villa.

It should however be a much needed boost of confidence for a few players, which they can hopefully carry into their league form. I do think, though, that unless we improve greatly over the next few matches, and play more like a solid unit, we could get taught a lesson away to inter.

All this discussion and debate about hand ball penalties could be ended if they just changed the rules to be like they are in hockey, where if it hits your foot in the area it us a penalty corner. No exceptions. If it was the same in football then we wouldn't have to rely on various different interpretations of whether it was hand to ball or vice versa.

Pav was poor until his he scored the first of his penalties, after that he worked very hard, his first touch got miles better and he did a decent job of holding the ball up. So its very unfair to say he had a bad game apart from the penalties.

I thought we showed touches of real class last night, against opposition who used dirty tricks which, thankfully, didn't work for them in the end.

Well done the ten men.

There's gonna be a lot of penalty corners. Isn't it football we play?

Strange game, great result. the whole thing seems to sum up the way the season has started for us... lot of potential but not quite clicking.

The main thing i noted from the game was how much better Pav played once Crouch was off the pitch, seemed to hold the ball up more, find linking midfielders etc. either it was the confidence of the 2 pens or we suddenly stopped looking for long crosses to crouch all the time? (please dont think i am bashing crouch/sucking up to pav)

he absolutely meant it though, you can see that in his face when hes swinging his arm. obviously hope he doesnt get done for it but im not very hopeful.

if its true chosenone that the attendance was only 32k that is pretty bad, because i doubt we'd be able to explain it away by saying its the away fans not taking up their allocation

I just looked at the ITV highlights from last night and realised that the perimeter
restrictions and CL hoardings would account for a good few lost seats.

Maybe not that many though.

I watched the game and for me it's reinforced an opinion I've had since seeing us lost to Wigan at home.

We are better with Benny at left back and Bale on the wing. To me it is no coincidence that in the games we have moved Bale to left back, in order to accommodate still having him in the team plus VDV, Modric and Huddlestone all in midfield (so we can still play 2 up front) we have lost our attacking impetus.

I think we're getting to a stage now where we seriously need to consider playing a 4-5-1 in order to get the best out of the players we have.

Gomes
Hutton, Dawson, King, Benny
Lennon, VDV, Hud, Mod, Bale
Crouch/Pav/Defoe

I think this could be the way to go in future.
