What does 'success' mean to us?
For me it is getting the academy to produce the next wave of hungry kids.
I want us to produce a stream of technically brilliant players like Ajax do.
I want us to be in the position where when our top stars demand to go to Real Madrid, we have 1 or 2 youngsters that look like they can step up and compensate for their lack of experience with boundless energy.

The disappointing thing is that for some reason the academy is not successfully feeding our first team. Bringing youngsters through used to be MP's strength.

This is THE summer to show whether we are truly ambitious as a club or not.

Up to now, we are world class at excuses.

Even half the contributions to this forum seem to be content that we have a stadium but win nothing. What ambition is that? Who ever decides to follow a football club as a kid because they have a great stadium?!?!?

If we didn't already know it, it should be pretty obvious that we should look at the scousers as a model of how to run a club and really compete with Europe's elite. They got their manager and backed him. They're not funded by some Russian or Arab prince. They are a sustainable club, doing things the right way, investing in young and established players alike. Are our owners brave enough to follow their example?

Maybe someone on here who's happy that we'll only ever be also rans might explain to me why we can't compete with Liverpool?

We are based in London (which is a hell of alot more attractive than living on Merseyside), we have a super manager, we've a recent track record of playing in the Champions League, we've a better & bigger stadium, etc.

So why shouldn't we be able to match Liverpool?

Spending €100m in today's transfer market ain't gonna cut it. Minimum 4 first team players are needed now - and we need to be signing another couple of young, hungry, unproven players (the next Dele and Dier, etc.) to make sure we have the pipeline of talent coming through. Net spend of at least €150m needed. That should be available after spending nothing for the last 16mths....

I take and agree with your points about Liverpool. 3 years ago we were in the CL and they weren't. We were interested in the some of the same players (Mane and Wijnaldum) who also wanted to join us. Unfortunately we could't get those deals done and our wage ceiling at that time probably had a lot to do with it. 3 years on, they have continued to build and it is clear that are ahead of us now. Hope lessons have been learnt and we get 4 players in key positions this summer. I would hate another clusterfuck like the 7 signings we had after Bale was sold (only Eriksen and Lamela remain). Decent RB, CM, winger and back up striker is all we need. If Eriksen leaves then a decent playmaker will also be required to replace him otherwise we should be good.

We can kid ourselves in both directions as far as the club’s ambitions are concerned but going by recent experience no amount of pointing out we need to spend will sway Levy. It’ll happen when it happens so guessing the war chest amount now and speculating players we should sign is just pissing in the wind.
This. Our main issue is likely, as usual, to be freeing up squad places by selling players, and we will no doubt be hamstrung by Levy overvaluing our fringe players. I’m fully expecting minimal transfer activity and the same faces to be trotting out next season. It would probably take the sale of a big name to get things moving.

I think we are at a point where it's a case of starting again rather than a tweak to the squad with 1/2 in , now we are looking a lot more which is both tough to try and integrate along with no chance of levy spending that amount of money.

I guess with FFP we are going to need to sell anyway.

Davies, Trippier, Alderweireld, KWP, Lamela, Wanyama, Onomah, Edwards and Janssen could all be available plus we don't know what interest there will be in Eriksen.

I hope the club is looking into the right targets rather than just cheap options or top targets. Getting a De Jong would be great but that's not to say a Grealish or Brooks couldn't be great.

Grealish and Brooks would be excellent additions. De Jong no doubt is a good player we have Harry Winks tbh if he can stay fit is just as good.

This is all to do with the Stadium. We will reap the rewards soon enough! Liverpool will have their fun until their players leave for Barca or Real, then back to rebuilding whilst we will now push on. I expect a budget of over £100m this Summer no problem

We'll not have a window like the last two....I'm almost certain:)

I'd say we should sell the following and even if we didn't go crazy on our valuations, we should still add decent money to the kitty:
Vorm, Aurier, Davies, Lamela, Wanyama, Janssen, Llorente

We could consider selling Trippier too if we've got a RB lined up.

Then it's a question of whether any breakthroughs from youth are planned for next season. Foyth is on a good trajectory, but will KWP and Skipp be trusted to step up? Do we have a back-up keeper in the pipeline? Any forwards there for next season? If not, we need to buy even more than the baseline.

And the incoming baseline doesn't have to cost the earth, but Sessegnon would be a good addition, plus a central mid, forward (#9 style), and full back. We can still operate on quite low net spend level and enter next season in good shape.

The entirety of that list brings in about 50m tops imo. I’m worried about our budget this summer. I’d say we’ll spend less than 50m, net.

I'd be ok with a net spend of around 50M if there is plenty of activity. You could see us getting Wan-Bissaka, for example, and selling Trippier and not have a huge deficit on those right-back transactions. Similarly, shift Lamela & Wanyama (arguably our most valuable sales on that list) and get one good CM in their place.

So I wouldn't worry about the amount of net spend if we're actively engaged in the market. The big hurdle is our reluctance to get involved in the market, both for outgoings and incomings. Surely that must break a bit this summer. But nobody should expect a Van Dijk style spend on a single player.

Lessons have been learnt because we didn't have the financial income to compete with Liverpool. Now we have addressed that with our new ground our revenue will increase and we will get closer to competing with some of those clubs in regards to wages and transfers.

My concern is less about whether we intend to spend. We do, clearly, and intended to last summer as we know from De Jong. My worry is whether we have the know-how to get deals over the line in this market. Can we actually pull deals off? That is as much of a skill as anything else.

Obviously DL is a shrewd operator but to me it seems like he hasn't adapted from the transfer market of 2 or 3 years ago when the balance of power was very different. Now all the power is with the agents, and if you don't get on board with that, you simply aren't going to get deals across the line. We can all say it shouldn't be like that, and hopefully regulations will change soon re agents, but there's no use bemoaning reality -- it is how it is and we need to play the game or when the music stops, we'll be left snogging Stewart Downing.
