Sensible time for us to sell. Should bring in a fair bit of cash and we're over-stocked with that type of player. Bentancur being out and AFCON are of some concern. If we brought another in I'd say Amrabat would be decent but I'd sooner put the money into the deal for Tapsoba since CB is way more important.

So you'd be happy with Bissouma, Skipp, Sarr & White as our only CMs available to play behind Maddison at the start of the season, then (if Bentancur is back to match fitness, which is a big IF) only Bentancur, Skipp & White during AFCON?

That's asking for trouble imo.

Might still have GLC/Ndombele. We'll find out soon enough if Ange thinks he can do anything with them.

I’ll probably get shot down for this but would dier work well in that no.6 role of anges system? Might suit him better than being at cb

not sure he wants to be a midfielder again but could be ok as an emergency back up

I really want to see Sarr starting games this season. He's good already and only going to improve.

I'm actually hoping that at least one of the two comes good, but am assuming they won't until I see it happen. However, I'd see both of them having most chance of thriving in the more advanced Maddison role, or us ideally needing a proper CDM (we're unlikely to sign one this window) to sit behind Maddison + Ndombele / Lo Celso.

Dont see how we are not doing the smart thing in selling Ndombele for 20m, Hojbjerg for 25~m and lo celso for 20 isch.
There we have almost the full 50 for Palhinha and 20 + add ons for Alex Scott and we would be offloading alot of wages by doing so aswell.

Even if Sarr hits the ground running this season, we could be left short during AFCON, if we sell Hojbjerg and don't sign another CM.

The switch from 5-2-3 to 4-3-3 will require us to have more depth in CM, not less. Bentancur is injured. Sarr + Bissouma have AFCON. Only Maddison has signed.

I haven't seen anything to convince me that Sarr is ready to be a regular starter for a top 4 PL side. Perhaps a bottom half / mid-table PL team, but not a team of the level that we aspire to be at next season. He's only 20, so has plenty of time to develop, but for now I'd feel far more comfortable with Hojbjerg (or even Ndombele / Lo Celso) regularly starting games. Relying on Sarr would be almost as risky as relying on Devine or White to step up imo.

Palhinha - I'd like this (especially with the injury to Bentancur and two other CMs having AFCON next season), but can't see us signing a deep CM this window. It feels overly optimistic to hope for this on top of Maddison + Vicario + sorting out our defence.

Scott - Only makes sense to me if we're giving up on our young CMs who Scott would be competing with for minutes (Skipp, Sarr, White).

Skipp is for me the one to cash in on aswell or loan out to a PL squad, because he does not have the passing ability to play in a team that are going to dictate the play.
Palhinha, Bentancur/Bissouma, Maddison/Scott would be somehting else

If Palhinha costs £70M (reported figure), then I would rather spend the money on Tapsoba (£50M) and Scott (£20M) instead.

Being realistic about our finances and ability to keep good players happy as a squad player, given that we don't have any European (let alone CL) football this season:

Bentancur, Bissouma, Maddison, Hojbjerg, Ndombele & Lo Celso would all be unhappy if not starting regularly. Realistically, we could keep 4/6 of them happy (4 players sharing 3 places in the starting XI), with two needing to be sold.
If we assume Hojbjerg, Ndombele & Lo Celso are moved on, bringing in Palhinha or Scott (if he's considered good enough as 4th choice CM) is viable. If we were to sign both of them, whoever ends up as 5th choice will be rather unhappy (at least once Bentancur returns).

Skipp, Sarr & White are on low wages and, at least for next season, will be content (or at least make do) with battling it out to be our 5th choice CM. This makes it extremely viable for us to retain 2/3 of them as squad players and loan out the third.
However, I can't see any of them being thrilled about falling behind 19-year-old Scott in the pecking order though, so we'd probably need to sell or loan 2/3 of them in that scenario, or 3/3 of them if we were to sign both Palhinha and Scott. That would be a lot of turnover.

I haven't seen much of Scott. Are you that confident he'd be able to step up to the PL and help us to dictate the play in his first season?

If we keep Ndombele, as reported, then Scott is not required. Signing Scott only makes sense if we offload Ndombele and Los Celso. And he will probably be backup for Maddison.
If we sell Holjberg, Palhinha will definitely be an improvement. The price tag is the only impediment, IMO. For that kind of money, we can improve the backline (our major weakness) significantly. Though the defensive midfield also needs reinforcement, is not as critical as the centre backs, which with the exception of Romero, should all be cleared out ASAP.

Other players I'd rather ship out before Hojbjerg.
I've seen plenty of people knocking Hojbjerg but definitely agree with you, although also understand that it's probably the perfect time to sell him given contract length/age/new system. I would point out to the knockers that being ever present under coaches like Conte and Mourinho , then being wanted by Simeone strongly suggests you aren't a bad player ! (while also possibly hinting strongly what 'type' of player you are). He'll be missed if he goes, strong character and presence on and off the pitch - and better technically than people give him credit for, scored some good goals and made a few superb assists but misremembered for the sideways passes and negative play at the end of a shit season, when knackered and no one showing for the ball to pass to.

You can only ship out players if other teams want to buy them. We have interest, he's a non-essential therefore you take that interest and run with it. No point holding on to him cause you can't sell Dier etc.

Yes you've worded that perfectly - he's a non essential, rather than simply not wanted, so if the right offer arrives and we feel we can re invest in a more essential player then win-win.

Brave!

A top defensive midfielder ball winner would be great, this window we need to have a huge clear out, small squad, bring though young players and use our reduced wage bill to improve our squad over the next few years.
