Top four treatment?

A point raised in a swedish football blog today. Have we actually this season benefited from being a top 4 team?

August 21st, away at Stoke.

Crouch chests away a ball that looks to have crossed the goalline. No goal, we get the three points.

September 18th, home against Wolves.

They are denied a, in Mick Mcarthy's words, stonewall penalty and we get a penalty. Three points.

September 29th, home against Twente.

Three penalties. Three points.

October 16th, away at Fulham.

Gallas is offside, the linesman flags, we still get the goal. Three points.

It's all circumstantial but we've actually had a bit of luck this season, no?

We've had plenty of luck this season actually - it's helped us big time

We need to up our level of performances, some of our results have been highly marginal

Hudd's goal was the right decision. Gomes was fouled in the buildup to Crouch clearing it off the line at Stoke so justice was done.

I noticed that too. We're getting these borderline/wrong decisions our way like never seen before. If this keeps up, we're going to have to stop whinging about how wronged we are by the officials...

Seems to be the case for all of the new "Big 5" ('pool out, us and city in) to an even higher level than usual.

The real proof that some kind of fix is in will come when Howard Webb gives us an undeserved penalty. Or even a deserved one, actually.

Also fair point, but bearing in mind the decisions could have gone the other way, you could argue that we have had the rub of the green in a couple of instances

Someone should inform the officials that City aren't top 4 yet then ..

- Micah Richards blatent foul on Bale, no penalty

- Boyata twice fouling Drogba in the area when the ball was nowhere near them

- Tevez gaining a penalty from a perfectly good tackle by Williamson vs Newcastle

- Ameobi denied the most blatent penalty you'll ever see

- De Jong breaks Ben Arfa's leg in two and doesn't even get a foul given against him

- Tevez offside scores against Blackpool

- Tevez fouls the Blackpool defender from behind and scores

- Blackpool have a perfectly legit goal disallowed against them

Also good points - actually, they've been incredibly lucky

I was thinking this after the fulham game. However I'd say that we've just been getting shafted for so long we're only geting what we deserve now. Traditionally the top4 get decisions they don't deserve (Mendes' goal not given at OT). If we start getting penalties for nothing and our opponents get blatent goals chalked off then we're getting true top4 treatment

every team gets a bit of luck for and against them throughout the season, but god forbid the day we ever get as undeserving of glory and as lucky as liverpool.

We've had some good luck but I'm sure it's just the universes way of making up for all our injury problems.

vs Man City, two big penalty claims, specially that De Jong challenge on Defoe...

vs Stoke, Fuller and Schowcros both made serious challenge on our players, also their goal shouldn't be given, even their disallowed goal, it was foul on Gomes too...

I thought we were seriously short changed by the ref on Saturday.Dempsey had a licene to kick and their goal was hand ball.
Because we are winning people will talk about decisions which may have gone in our favour.

City also got the treatment vs Blackpool on Sunday...

You make your own luck... and I also agree that because we have ended up winning those games people are talking about the lucky decisions rather than how lucky the opposition were or that we were robbed.

It's always the same.

What has changed is that like a so called top 4 club we are believeing in ourselves and creating that little bit more, that in turn increases the chances of something going your way.

If like the Mendes goal, that's your only chance and you're robbed of it, then that's harsh, but now I feel like we are doing enough so that decisions like that no longer cost us. That to me is the difference.

I'll give a definitive answer AFTER the OT game:wink:

or maybe they've made afew extra big money signings we haven't heard about

I was seriously beginning to feel like that might be the case after the Blackpool gameEek
