Did they not end up knocking us out of the CL that year too?

Think it's safe to say he made the right decision in the end though!
Not the same year, maybe a year after. It was the first year we played the Champs league at Wembley and Son was the year before that

Know not allowed to ask ITK but rest of you guys maybe know/heard

What's the hardest part in getting a new player ? Convince the player ? The agent or the club?

Nowadays it almost seems it hardest to get the agent to work with you because they only want money and don't care about what's best for the player

Also thanks for all the info trix! Now we just hope we get this deal done and find a CM.

Seems in the new age the most difficult part for Spurs is dealing with the agent fees.

I think there is a reason why Liverpool, as one example, have had such a large increase in Agent fees paid out in recent windows.

The thing with Werner - I don't think he is really competing for time with Kane. He will fit in any slot across the front 3.

So, perhaps a switch to a 433

Werner Kane Son

Dele Lamela

Dier

Rose Jan Toby KWP

Lloris

This assumes Erisken is off in the summer. Leaves Lucas on the bench, and we would probably want one more in - Grealish or Bowen to help with the HG requirements. We would still have Winks and Sissoko who could play in a CM3

An attack to rival Liverpool

Stacked as in Son is away and has missed multiple games this season due to internationals, Moura is injured and hasn't proved himself over a long period of time yet, and Lamela is seemingly always a few games away from injury, and our only exact striking back-up for Kane is Llorente, who is off. In what way are we "stacked"?

Son is rarely away - this year is the exception rather than the rule - and Moura has been injured for like 2 weeks. If Mane went to AFCON and Shaqiri was out with a niggly injury would you say Liverpool needed to spend 60 million on a Firminho backup? How many players are we supposed to have as wide men/auxiliary strikers? We essentially have 4 players for those 2 positions (Kane/Llorente, Son/Lucas). Llorente aside (he's about the highest quality perma-benchwarmer we can keep happy) we're about as strong as any team in the league in that position. If we were to add any more than that we'd imbalance the squad and Lucas would probably ask to leave.

When everyone was hot on Martial, what was the difference? Someone who can play up top if needed, but is actually more suited to wide support role? Werner has a much better record than Martial and is younger.
I made the exact same argument about Martial. Great player, maybe an upgrade, but NOT a priority.

Lucas Moura's goal to game ratio is franking embarrassing compared to Werner and he's four years older – and he's played five of his years for the best club in Ligue 1, a league substantially worse than the Bundesliga. Werner's done it at a promoted team and helped fire them to all kinds of records for the best performances by a promoted team in German history.

Of course Werner has a better goalscoring record - he plays as a lone striker whereas Lucas plays predominantly as a wide forward/winger with the odd game as a second striker. For his position, Lucas's goal return is fine and comparing him to Werner isn't really fair.

I agree with your last point, though. If the deal is possible, he's who Poch really wants and we think we can integrate him into the team while keeping everyone happy then we should go for it. We need to grasp these rare opportunities when the come along.

However, if it's at the expense of signing a quality midfielder then it's still ridiculous IMO.

Far better to pay the money now for a player you want as by the next transfer window, they will cost even more.

I don’t get why levy can’t figure this out, it’s called inflation.

Prices will only get worse.

Look at zaha’s valuations each year.

Look at the prices being demanded currently.

I am a big Levy fan generally but if he wants to wait a few months to shave off money from a deal and probably lose out completly then he needs to readress the expectations for the club, because at some point the level we are playing at is just not sustainable without adding the required quality.

I get that we have to box clever, and cant like man city buy 3 wingbacks for 150 million or 60 million on a player like Mahrez for no reason, but i doubt many of us are expecting that.

I didn’t say we should spend 60m. I was challenging that we’re “stacked”. We’re not stacked in any department, we can’t afford to be

Liverpool have Mane, Salah, Firmino, Shaquiri, Sturridge, Origi, Lallana, Brewster. Now that’s stacked. Again I’m not saying 60mil, but they bought Shaqiri when they were “stacked” themselves so I don’t follow. We are not even remotely “stacked” in the attacking department

You have half this site saying he’s a wide support forward but you say he’s a lone striker? Which is it? As someone’s wrong. I’ve been listening to people say you can’t compare him to Kane as he’s a wide forward for the last 2 days

As I’ve said since the start, I don’t think we’ll get him. But the idea that we’re covered up top is a nonsense. There are other areas we should focus on first though, agreed

If Salah and Firmino were out Liverpool’s attack would be:

Sturridge
(If he can play two games a week)
Lallana Shaqiri Mane
With a bang average Origi and an untested youth Brewster in reserve.

With Kane and Son out our attack could be:

Lucas
Dele Eriksen Lamela
With a bang average Llorente and an untested youth Parrot in reserve.

I’m not sure why they’re stacked but we’re not if being honest. I know Lucas ain’t a striker but as a 4 I’d say there’s nothing between them (personally I’d say ours is better overall). Only Man City are what I’d call stacked, I think both us and Liverpool could find space for Werner.

Their 'stacked' is pretty much man for man the same as ours. Salah (Kane), Firmino (Alli), Mane (Son), Shaqiri (Eriksen), Sturridge (Lucas), Lallana (Lamela), Origi (Llorente). Then theres a kid in Brewster who simply hasn't played.

Man for man I would say we at least draw those battles.

Its easy to look stacked without injuries.

Why would they sell Werner in January? Doesn't make any sense.

You make an offer they can’t refuse.

to get a player you want, that the the parent club don’t want to sell you have to pay over the top. Simples.

Everyone has a price, as the million dollar man once said, mwahhahaha

(Problem is, our $$$ man doesn’t pay even the standard price)
