After his move north, his first pro contract at Liverpool was worth £2,000-per-week and his current deal earns him £35,000-per-week as previously mentioned.

Michael Calvin details in his book, The Nowhere Men, how Sterling would take part in pick-up games organised by Walley on a pitch in the back garden of the home of Tim Sherwood, then Tottenham’s technical co-ordinator.

Calvin writes that Spurs turned down the chance to sign Sterling for £200,000 because academy coaches were in disagreement over his long-term potential. Fulham were assured of his talent and had Sterling in their building before Liverpool swooped to take him to Merseyside aged 15 for £500,000.

Well that's a bit of a balls up then, the fact I have never heard him mention this makes me think it was probably him who said no.

wasn't he at QPR before Liverpool?

I'm sure I read somewhere that Spurs didn't sign him when we had the opportunity as we were "put off by his troubled background"... whatever that means...

Yeah he was the 500K would have been for them I guess.

It probably means they met him and thought he was a weapon.

But still, up there with the rejection of Suarez on fuck ups.

I fully expect Sherwood's next press conference to be full of "if it wasn't for me, Sterling would have been playing for Tottenham right now" quotes....

I still don't think that we "missed out" yet. The jury is still out.

Has he done enough to warrant the contract he's seeking? No, to be honest.

I'm happy with the academy lads we've got, I don't think we'd be better off by having a lad disrupt the squad with the contract issues he's had at Liverpool, the "rest" and "required" holidays abroad, and general lack of passion for a club he's been at since 15.

Those who thought he was trouble may turn out to be shrewd, and those who think he doesn't have long term potential may also be right. Remember Bentley? He was a cracking young player with massive potential once, too.

There will have been misses on some players in the past and few to come, it is the way it goes. Some times a team sees something another doesnt so takes a chance. Can't get em all right.

So Sherwood handed Liverpool Suarez and Sterling they should be grateful. Not too bothered about Sterling though he is a very good young player. Would have been excellent in our academy.

Tbf it supports the notion that we do spot these players quite. a bit earlier than other Clubs. Also interesting to hear Sherwood hosts games in his garden clearly cares about young players and development.

And the baggage it said was that he was eexcluded from school due to trouble and went to a special school.

"...the move to Liverpool was motivated by a need ‘to get out of London’."

So, er, we didn't have a choice really... move along.
