In the light of another weekend of controversial decisions by assistant referees in the Premiership, Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore has joined forces with his FA counterpart Brian Barwick to set matters right.

Scudamore said: “A wrong decision can cost clubs points, and worse, millions of pounds in revenue in terms of their placing at the end of the season. The cumulative effect of a number of poor decisions could even affect relegation, promotion and European qualification issues.

Whilst acknowledging that the referee must remain the arbiter of matters on the pitch, and after consultation with Keith Hackett, we have decided to concentrate on the more straightforward ‘line’ decisions of the referee’s assistants.

Mr Barwick and I have decided to establish a committee - The Assistant Referee Selection Executive (A.R.S.E), that with effect from next season (2008-2009) will have the power to retrospectively look at specific decisions, and if necessary to change decisions and the results of matches. Teams will have to appeal for a Change in Result After Play (C.R.A.P) within 24 hours of the final whistle.

It is a matter which both Mr Barwick and myself take very seriously indeed, and we know that from correspondence received that it is foremost in the minds of fans.

For that reason, we will both sit on the twelve man committee. When fans hear Brian Barwick or myself speak from A.R.S.E, they can look forward to a great deal of C.R.A.P.”

All of the above is run by Brian Barwick and his Committee Undertaking Nationwide Technical Surveillance, i think!
