I don’t understand what you don’t understand. If we sell Eriksen, in this market we would have to pay £80m+ to adequately replace him and then the wages that go with it - and will we do that? No. We couldn’t even sign Grealish when Villa were faced with the threat of extinction.

It’s arrogant because the club think they can sell a world class player (which he is, regardless of sugarcoating it any other way like we did with Walker) and replace him easily. Players of his ilk don’t want to play for us. Our only hope is to sign a young guy with potential to maybe end up fulfilling Eriksen’s duties.

Or we’ll just play Dele there and sign a winger. Can’t wait to go back to having limited craft and guile in midfield. Even when Eriksen isn’t firing - he still creates chances and sometimes pops up with a worldie.
Ok, the club is arrogant, but what other choice do they have? If he’s turned down very good contract offers, are you suggesting we let him run his contract down and lose him for nowt?

Check out @HotspurRelated’s Tweet:

This is a joke right ???????

Ill be honest with you - reading the twiter takes me from the highest mountain right down to underwhelming come down.

That is an underwhelming list lets be honest particularly where we will be getting rid or rather two players of Tobys and Eriksens class are leaving.

It's hard to see us doing anything but going backwards on the football side over the next couple of seasons. Gutting to think that the last few years are likely to end up being the best we have been or will be again for some time, and we've won jack shit during that period.

As I said in another thread, I am entirely unconvinced that any financial benefits that the new stadium brings us will translate to us being able to put out a better football team in future than the one we have right now, so in the short-to-medium term I see very little to be optimistic about with the club right now.
Sorry, we’re in a doom and gloom place at the moment because we’ve had a few losses, but I don’t believe this.

It’s all down to the correct recruitment in the summer. If we make the right signings, we’ll be right there next season.

Get it right, and we could see the squad reinvigorated by some fresh legs and minds, and put that together with the holy trinity of Kane, Son, Dele, the almost taken as given of Poch’s consistent ability to motivate and inspire, and the positivity of playing in one of the best stadiums in the world, and we can be born again.

Of course, get the recruitment wrong whilst losing Toby, Eriksen and still feeling Dembele’s departure, and we’ll be in trouble. But I don’t take it as a writtten yet.

I very much doubt that is Poch’s list. The Daily Fail were just padding the article with some of the rumours that we’ve been linked with recently.

Article in the Mail also states that we've pretty much accepted that Zaha is out of our price range.

As for the rest. Okay, but a bit underwhelming.

What will hurt us is if we lose some key players and then piss about until 11.59 on deadline day to get anybody in. Early dealings in key areas are crucial.

Very true. I only hope that Levy learned from last summer that the early closure of the window in England has somewhat mutated the entire thing, and that deadline day isn’t as full of possibility as it once was. Time will tell, I guess.

No, I don’t think it’s the club’s fault for his leaving - but the idea he is replaceable for a club with our limitations is incorrect imo.

We could have signed a player in either of the two windows just gone to act as an understudy/rotation option - easy.

It's like how we thought we could just replace Walker. Now Toby and Eriksen. Those are some of the best players in the world at their positions and are so hard to replace. Look at replacing Bale... Eriksen was basically all we got out of that. And with the clubs recent transfer activity it's hard to be optimistic on how it will turn out. I think most would agree we haven't had a great summer window since 15/16.

It feels like we're starting over a bit after not adding the right pieces for the final push with what felt like a "golden generation" for Spurs.
The level of arrogance running through our club, so it seems, that we can ‘just replace’ Eriksen & Toby is mind boggling. As you correctly stated we thought the same with Walker and look where that’s got us....

‘Just replace’ Toby & Eriksen for like for like quality will cost £100m plus. We are approaching our very own LFC/Coutinho moment where we are about to lose 2 of our 3 best players (Kane undisputed No1) & do we trust these owners to go out do what LFC done which is pinpoint key areas needing strengthening & sign the very best available to fill them....? I think we know the answer to that!

Fair enough, we'll just have to see. But personally I have no confidence whatsoever that the club will be able to recruit players that won't leave us weaker than we were last summer, let alone see us stronger. I think we will sign players, but I don't have any trust that they'll be of a standard that won't see us regress.

Needless to say, I hope you're right and I'm wrong. But I don't have faith that you will be.

It’s a big test for the Poch/Levy/Hitchen combo, that’s for sure. I’m hoping that the with the uncertainty over the stadium over Levy will be able to both put more time into the window and be more confident about the financials. But, as you say, proof will be in the pudding.

You can look to the Liverpool example or you can look at Dortmund. They lost two of their best players in Dembele and PEA, and put their faith in gathering young talent to great effect. OK, they may not win their league, but they will be more of a mental thing, than a failure to recruit properly.

You can compare us to Liverpool while we have the stadium costs hanging over us. We are just two clubs in every different places.

Very difficult to sign a decent understudy to Eriksen given the amount of time they'd get on the pitch. We couldn't get Maddison for that reason, but if Eriksen goes it will be a different scenario and a big opportunity.

Papers saying Real looking to offload James and Kovacic this summer to raise funds for their transfer targets. Rumoured price to be €50m.

In the grand scheme of things, those are not ridiculous figures. We paid that for Sanchez pretty much, both James and Kovacic would improve us dramatically, addressing an area of loss in Eriksen.

Both players are proven winners, and we will not win shit by buying 18 year olds from the championship, it’s all about balance. Those two, mixed with a new CB (Anderson??) a new full back, potentially another young midfielder and a new wide forward/striker, I genuinely think we are contenders?

I’ve not been that impressed with Kovacic at Chelsea. He’s been tidy, nothing more. Maybe it’s Sarri’s system, but expected more from him. He’s made noises about staying there too.

Would Chelsea be able to sign him though with their transfer ban?

I think Kovacic has been patchy but shown signs of brilliance at times. I think he could flourish in Poch’s system, along with the fact he can play multiple positions in the middle, having played as a 10 at times as well as an 8 and a 6 too!

Well they ended up getting €75m + 11m add-ons in the end so can only really blame ourselves for not paying up when it really mattered.
I’m sure it wasn’t the price that made them pull out. More that PSG and Barcelona have more prestige than us

Sad times when we start believing the Mail.

Oh totally. But in my defence your honour, I've merely commented on players a newspaper has suggested we are interested in.

At no point have I said, or indeed believed the written word to be gospel, merely given a point of view regarding the hypothetical players mentioned.

Case dismissed.
