"That season we won the Champions League, at the beginning, Ronaldo was suspended for three games [after being sent off at Portsmouth], so I stayed behind to work with him. I knew what Ronaldo wanted. He wanted to be the best player in the world. I told him: ‘I can help you with that. There’s nothing wrong with your work ethic, it’s a wave pushing you forward.’ So I drew this diagram for him, pointing out his details as a player.

“There’s the ‘tactical’ bit, awareness, understanding, decision-making. There’s the ‘physical’; everyone has his peak fitness, especially Ronaldo, his pace, strength, stamina and agility. There’s the ‘personality’, winning mentality and attitude. The last bit is ‘technical’, the basics, passing, shooting, moves, turns, and other skills to dominate the one to one. I asked Ronaldo: ‘Where are you good at?’ He said: ‘Skills.’ ‘OK, so with one-touch and two-touch play, plus the moves you have, will make you unpredictable and therefore very hard to defend against.’“

Good read and very relevant to the Bale situation.

For me we're probably past the point of no return with GB which is a real shame. I think if Bale stayed another year he'd have been able to work on things in a similar way and push on after a season. May be a year too soon but I'm sure his quality will eventually match the setting at RM, just without the added assurance of an instant impact.

That is a great read. Shows that Man Utd weren't just the best beacuse of their players and Fergie. Great coaching and attentiion to detail there.

I think we all know that Bale is nowehere near Ronaldo's level. Then again, apart from Messi, who is?

Bale has all the physical attributes but two main things stand out for me : 1) Bale has no right foot. He has scored with his right but almost always tries to avoid using it. Ronaldo may be stronger on his right but is pretty two footed. 2) Decision making. Ronaldo must have learnt from his coaches as he is far less greedy than he used to be.

Its a big shame that we will never get to see the best of Bale but I don't really blame him for leaving.
