Didn't he get a lengthy ban for drug use in '94?

I thought it was just an international ban but a quick Wiki search shows he didn't play the 94-95 season but did 95-96 so plausible that he was a free agent at the beginning of that season..

Funny, I heard this from someone who claimed to know a lot at the club years ago...
Don't suppose we'd have ended up with Jurgen though if it'd happened!

As much as we would have loved to have Maradona he would have been booed at every ground and he wouldn't have come back to save us from our relegation worries a few years later. I think it was the right call to get Klinsmann instead. I know he wasn't popular with other fans either but he was able to win them over, Maradona will never be forgiven and it would have turned into a circus.

Also, Ardiles' attack would have been known as 'the famous high five'.

Yeah with Maradona about if the rest had taken a drink from his water bottle I guess they would have been pretty high.

I guess another way it could have gone is that he led us to the league title, attracted more big name signings and we could have dominated world football for all these years. Ahh well, you win some you lose some.

I can still remember so clearly that game against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park where he scored 4.
We were so shit and yet that remains one of the best away days I've had.

Ridiculous to think we were in that position when we had Klinsmann, Ginola, Anderton and Ferdinand. Shows how appalling our defence was.

Regarding the ones that got away, Harry Redknapp has just been announced as the guest at The Spurs Show's next live show.

I hope they get some insight from him regarding which players we came close to buying when he was manager.

We know that we met Courtois, Hazard and of course that Sherwood told him not to but Suarez! However, I bet there are loads of other stories.

In 2010 we were pretty convinced we'd sign Luis Fabiano, if I remember correctly.

I remember it like it was yesterday too but I was "watching" it on teletext with my mate going mental when the page updated with every goal (y)

Maradona would have loved being booed at every ground, I suspect.
