So Spotify is sponsoring the Nou Camp. Wonder how long it took them to find that deal?

Personally I found it interesting and relevant given how massive the naming rights sponsorship is reported to be.

When you break it down though it's not a greal deal.

It's £58.75 million but it's including the stadium, men and womens shirts AND the training shirts. They have given away all of their main sponsorship inventory (bar Kit Maker) for £58.75 million per annum basically.

In contrast, from what I can see Utd get nearly £10m a season more from the equivalent sponsorships without a naming rights sponsor:
£20m per annum for Training Shirts
£47m per annum for Main Shirt Sponsor

Even with us, from what I can find, we currently make a total of £45m per annum without a stadium sponsor:
£5m per annum for Training Shirts
£40m per annum for Main Shirt Sponsor

Pretty poor when you consider this is Barcelona we're talking about.

One reason the deal has been downgraded a bit is because Spotify found that the # of people registered with Barca for sponsorship purposes:

“When Spotify initially approached Barcelona, they made enquiries about the club’s fan database. The soon-to-be sponsors wanted to know the number of ‘registered’ fans, i.e., the supporters who had given consent for the club to use their names, email, phone number and other personal information.

And the number is believed to have left them disappointed. Barcelona is a club with a massive fan following across the globe, with over 350 million followers supporting the Blaugrana. However, out of that, just 1% of the fans, approximately around 3 million, are ‘registered’.

This is believed to have affected the valuation of the deal with Spotify. The report states that in case the number of fans who had consented to the sharing of their personal data was higher, Barça would have stood to gain much more financially from the sponsorship deal.”

Thank you for breaking it all down like that.

That doesn’t entirely surprise me. Can’t just be a direct comparison of clubs, you also have to factor in the league. The PL is the most watched league in the world, and addition to that, whatever PL team you sponsor will have a higher volume of games against other successful clubs with big worldwide fan bases.

And the fact there are companies in the market to actually pay these large amounts. I’m sure Spotify wouldn’t have been the only ones punting themselves forward for it either.

Just been away with a lad whos job it is to find Sponsorships for PL clubs. He used work for one PL team in particular.. Anyway we got talking about Spurs, he knows the previous two guys who’s job it was to find the sponsors for the stadium naming rights.. he reckons it’s a near on impossible task. I did mention there were rumours that it could be done by the summer, which he seemed surprised about, however he doesn’t know the guy who’s in charge of finding them.

He did go on about how Levy is a commercial genius though and went on about different facts regarding our stadium that Levy told him during a tour, how we got a huge amount of things for free, in return for companies being able to showcase their products to potential clients.

He stated that the stadium really is now an important national interest and how it’ll soon overtake Wembley, which coming from a non spurs fan, I did find interesting.

Really interesting job though..

I'm going to be that annoying person.

In summary, anything interesting to say?

10 minute read mate if that. My favourite is him alluding that our potential viewing market is 5bn people. This guy is going for the mother of all naming deals.

The NFT stuff aside, it was a heartening read. Even with the NFT stuff, the caution they're taking gives me hope they don't try and take the fans for a ride the same way a huge number of other clubs and players did over the last year
