Why? If Southgate is sacked, then wondering who succeeds him seems a pretty basic and obvious question.

If people think he's doing a bad job and should be fired, surely we only want that if others can do a better job.
I am pretty sure you could do a better job.

I genuinely think it would be harder to find someone who would do a worse job than Southgate currently is?

It's not really strange, he's just asking a question in return.

I know that some on here think Southgate is great because, you know, stats and stuff but in all honesty have you been impressed with the last couple of years?
The football has been stodgy and negative, picking players on reputation not form.
Someone said with a different manager we win something, so I asked who he thought would win us something.

If someone interprets that as I think Southgate is great, well that's just weird.

It’s clearly an issue for debate but I’m almost certain a majority of people (including me) would prefer Graham Potter or Eddie Howe to Southgate as a starting point.
I've already said I think it's time for Southgate to go after the upcoming tournament. A poster said we'd win something with a different manager, seemed pretty standard to ask who.

So what do you think of Southgate?
I know that you like a debate and can be a bit contrary at times but do you think he's doing a good job?

no one is certain to win anything but Howe or Potter would in my view significantly increase our chances of winning the Euro’s simply on the account they are far better coaches.

Here's my view on Southgate:

My view is he took over when we had a young team, and were pretty weak in several areas.

Despite that he got better tournament results than any England manager in my lifetime in taking us to a final and a semi final.

I'm usually quite down on the England team, I never believed the "Golden Generation" was special, but I think right now we do have something special.

Kane, Bellingham and Foden are simply brilliant players. I think we need a manager to unleash this attacking talent. Southgate's safety first approach was right for the previous teams, but I think his time as England manager is coming to an end.

But I'll look back at his time as manager as the best in my lifetime though I preferred watching the teams of Robson, Venables and Hoddle.

Ah, you've answered the question I've just asked if you.
Personally, I think he should have gone after the last tournament because the signs of stagnation were already there for me.

I think it's time for Southgate to move on after the upcoming tournament.

I think a manager who can put the right team together, deal with the press and get the big calls right is what works at international level. I see Howe and Potter as excellent coaches and not the right fit for an international job.

He should’ve gone after that 0-4 defeat to Hungary.

I do think he did a good job of steadying the ship and reinventing the mood around the national side (and it was seriously needed after a long abysmal run of managers) but if he couldn’t get us over the line at home against a less than great Italy side then he never will win anything for us.

He’s been here the best part of a decade now and he’s really only achieved one stand out result in a meaningful game, and that was against a poor Germany side at home.

I wanted him gone after the last tournament too. I thought he'd done a good job up to then but we need a more attack focused manager to suit the team we currently have.

Howe in my view would be fantastic as an international coach. Gets on with players, calm, able to implement a style quickly, can coach attacking football, tactically flexible.

Who did England Play in the 1990 World Cup before Germany. Nobody! Who were the great teams England knocked out in euro 1996 under Venables. You tell me.
Italy were on a 35 game unbeaten run when they won the euros.
Getting bored of reading such uninformed crap. Most successful manager since Ramsey, like it or not.
Italia 90 we played Netherlands who had the Koeman brothers, Gullit, Rijkaard and van Basten at their peak. We also played Cameroon, who beat finalists Argentina in the group stage.

In Euro 96, we played Netherlands and Spain.

He's a good shout. I actually think a prime Harry Redknapp would be really good with the current crop but obviously not now.

Yeah, I'm totally with you there.
As for naming a replacement, jeez, I wouldn't know where to start.
I think Howe may be suited to international work but Potter not so much.
Klopp would be great but as you say, I'm not sure I can see a German in charge of England.
A couple of years back i may have even gone for Jose but his time with us has scuppered that idea, which is a shame because I actually think he'd suit the international game.

Apart from that, I haven't the foggiest.
Who's managing the U21's? At one stage the FA were trying to create some kind of pathway through the ranks but I'm not sure if that's still the case and I reckon they'll want a "name".

Arry was always the manager England should have had. He was perfect for international football imo.
