I had resigned myself to the loss of Modric. And I believe his loss would be easier to compensate for than the loss of VDV. Intelligence, craft and composure in the final third is something we lack the most. Even if we'd have signed Moutinho, it wouldn't have really addressed this issue.

To that end, I am not happier with our first team. I really wanted us to bring in a creative player. Fuck, I'd have taken Benayoun last minute. We've even sold GDS who may have given us at least one other attacking option.

But none of that is relevant to my point. If the manager(s) first choice are deals we simply cannot do for financial reasons etc, then we have to accept the reality of the situation and I do not believe players would be foisted on managers by Levy without a consultation process.

I get the impression that VDV was desperate to go live with his wife. Why the fuck else would he go to a Hamburg at the foot of the German league. It's not for footballing reasons. Maybe if we'd hit CL he'd have found it harder to go ?
