It's still all up in the air the last I heard. As I mentioned, VdV is much simpler to do, we know what it will take to get him and the club feel that's good value. We haven't given up on Tapsoba and continue to try and find a solution. Currently they're asking for too much money but there has been progress. The club are trying to line up both deals. Tapsoba is highly rated by many at the club, they feel he could be huge.

But speculating on the combinations of defensive reinforcements right now would be just that. There is a chance we could bring both in if we could clear the decks. There is a chance it's just one of them with the likes of Tosin and Lenglet also coming in. The club will try and line up both deals and then make a call on who they want and how that affects the rest of the budget and plans. It's clear that Tapsoba would cost more than VdV.

I like the look of both defenders, but if I had to choose I would go all in on Tapsoba and then try for Tosin. That doesn't mean I don't want VdV, I think he has huge potential. But if we are looking for an immediate impact, a back 2 of Romero and Tapsoba with Tosin as back up and then maybe Dier as 4th choice before he leaves next Summer would be absolutely fine with me.

good to hear that we are still trying for both, and I still think it is unacceptable to have Dier, Sanchez and Tangana in our squad for the coming season. 2 top CBs+1 cheap option is a must

I think you have misunderstood the post.
H88 said that we could do both but would need to clear the decks, not that we would need to clear the decks and bring in Lenglet.
Is Lenglet and option yes, and I suppose it would require selling others to bring him back, but I dont think that was the message conveyed by H88

From the noise coming out of Barca it doesn't sound as if they have much (if any) interest in Lenglet from other clubs. Maybe we see him as an option should anything fall through and we're desperate for numbers come the end of the window.

I'd be very surprised if we deemed him any sort of priority, hopefully he's 4th or 5th on the list.

I'd be very surprised if we brought in both regardless of how many went out personally. It's looking like two CB's in, but IMO it's Topsoba or VDV.

I dont think there will be many in here surprised if we do only sign one of them and a cheaper alternative alongside. I actually dont mind as long as it is Tosin. Tosin, COULD be something, whereas we know what Lenglet is.

I wish we would just go the extra mile for once. I think buying both makes more sense long term than buying one and gambling on a lesser backup. It is what it is though and was fully expected. I just hope its Tapsoba as I think he is more ready to start for us than VDV at this stage.

Inferring from the latest ITK is that Tapsoba is clearly the preferential CB for Ange and club doing all they can to facilitate this transfer but there is a cut-off period that we will shift attention to van de Ven to allow time in pre season to adapt.

but squad planning is not just about 1 season. if the management is ambitious enough we should get both especially if it is financially practicable

So it looks like the combinations DL is considering (assuming two come in) are:

Topsoba plus Vdv = 80m
Topsoba plus Tosin = 65m
Topsoba plus Lenglet = 55m
Vdv plus Tosin = 45m
Vdv plus lenglet = 35m

my pure guess is that they probably think 60m is about what they should be spending without significant incoming money, which is why they are still working on bringing Topsoba price down and also not committing to anyone until they see who they might be able to get money for.

(Of course this is transfer fees only and doesn’t account for wages)

Would love both, but if we did get Tapsoba over the line, it’s possible VDV may look at that and figure he’s backup/rotation in a season with no Europe and decide he’s better off with another season of 1st team football in the Bundesliga.

Every player on the squad should expect to start, barring the second GK. That is how competitive teams work they push each other.

It absolutely has to be Tapsoba over VDV, appreciate we may not be able to agree on a price but if we can we have to pick him over the Dutch lad.
