Where does it say that the club "didn't know the rule"?

surely if they'd made a mistake they'd just not have gone ahead with the loan deal rather than somehow convincing Doherty to rip up his contract in the midst of a panic?

Occam's razor suggests all parties knew exactly what they were doing doesn't it?
Not sure I understand your logic?

I presume we realised the fuck up after Doherty had already agreed the loan with Atletico, otherwise we never would've made it clear there was no obligation to buy.

You can't just cancel a loan once the contracts are all signed, hence we had no choice but to terminate his entire contract as otherwise we were committing to what would've been an illegal loan.

We could've cancelled the contract of any of our loanees to stay within the rules and obviously decided Doc was the least valuable player with the shortest contract, hence he got the chop.

Considering nobody sees Danjuma as a starter, I'm assuming Porro must be the best player in the world as he seems to have been trusted on his own to entirely change how we play.

I do exaggerate...but not that much.

Maybe I should think before writing this: … but you’d like to think when they discovered the issue they at least ran worst case scenario numbers right? Ie full payment of wages and no incoming fee vs agreeing to rip up.

Big assumption that we paid - because surely we just keep the asset and flog in summer.

Who knows.
Doc would be in a very small minority of players if he willingly gave up a year of salary. Even if he was told he’d not play for us again this season, I’d still expect him to demand a sweetener in order for him to go.

If it had happened earlier in the window or because it was the only way to offload him then fine.

But its clearly because of a rule change they were oblivious to and that reeks of incompetence.

Which is glaring because these people are in control of managing a football squad.

So what else have they fucked up with?

Can you see Tottenham building a squad ready to compete with healthy options with people like this making decisions?

I cant
But what else do you expect from this ownership. Haggle for bargains, sell for OTT fee’s - it doesn’t work!

It highlights where the issues stem from and it’s not conte or whoever the manager may be

One commanding top level ccb may well sort out the whole backline through leadership and experience. We may not be too far away from having a great defence

Perhaps Djed deciding to go on loan to France, and a very late offer from atletico forced spurs into making a decision without fully understanding. The fact that nothing happens in the window until the last 24 hours is completely bonkers. However, it isn't only spurs who operate like this.

The Doherty stuff is a proper final slap in the face in a month where I've realised I don't like or trust pretty much every element of the club

That actually makes it much worse as I was assuming it was a case of us saying to Doc ‘if you want this move you’re going to have to agree to cancel your contract with us and relinquish any future wages owed’, to which Doc agreed. Otherwise he would be back at Spurs and the loan was off.

But if the loan had already been signed and it was a case of we had to cancel one of our loanee’s contracts to not fall foul of the rules, then there’s no reason for Doc to agree to terminate his contract as it’s not his problem Spurs fucked up. Which means we must have agreed to pay up all owed wages to him up front to get him to agree to the termination. That’s a hell of a lot more expensive!

What a clusterfuck!

Can someone help me out here please? I need a few quid to buy a new lollipop ladies uniform with extra large pockets for a few things the school run mums might need ?

Huh? If the club had fucked up and made an illegal loan deal then that loan deal is immediately invalid.
At that point there is nothing to stop Matt returning as a Tottenham player UNLESS the true arrangement was always that this was a one way trip and both Club and player knew it.

My question isn't "how didn't we know the rules?" but, rather, why was it so urgent we get Doherty off our books that we tried to dress it up as a "loan" in the first place?

It used to be 4 loans in (domestically). Unlimited Internationally. We clearly didn't know about the 8 rule but (I'm speculating) we've also got confused about the 4 rule and that's stopped some deals.

@Rob am I missing something here as we don’t have any domestic loans in at the moment, only international ones, so how does the 4 rule come into play in terms of leading us to stop some deals?

Seems like another real cock up by the club, but are we surprised?

If Levy runs the playing side on a shoestring, why would we not expect him to do the same with staff behind the scenes? The poor gits are probably seriously overworked, understaffed and underpaid.
