I'm sorry, but I just don't understand this. Every window since VDV, an ITK has banged on about a last minute signing. This is surely shit, I'm sure Levy doesn't sit at his desk early in the window and decide that he's going to wait until the last minute to sign a player. VDV was a one-off, no doubt about it. Yes, Levy strives for the best possible deal, but the "last minute signing" suggests he waits until the last minute before putting a bid in for any player out there. Surely, he has a list of players that Redknapp has given him and he will search for the best possible deal for those players.

Really?

In the last few seasons here are some players signed on or around deadline day - Parker, VDV, Pavlyuchenko, Corluka, Keane, Rasiak, Mido.

It's a bit of a tradition with us, although more in the summer than in January.

Parker, Pav and Corluka had been brewing up for a while, they were just confirmed on deadline day. I admitted to the VDV transfer, and Keane, yea I agree that was one as well. I don't remember the Rasiak and Mido transfers at all so can't comment.

I was just making the point that I don't see how its the 12th of January and Levy has decided that he is going to wait until the last day to try for a transfer, unless ackie doesn't really mean last minute, but a transfer thats been developing over time a la Parker, Pav, Corluka

This last minute player you mention, ackie, are you saying it will be someone other than the ones you've mentioned?

And do you have an idea who it is?

I still think the Kaka loan story has legs. Not sure if it's a good idea, but I can see it happening.

As I understand from reading the boards we did agree a fee with Udinese. GDS however had his mind set on a move to Sevilla, who offered about half of what Udinese were willing to pay.

So that's why we told Sevilla to do one and that's why GDS is still here.

That is how I remember it, and it makers my blood boil whenever GDS has a media whinge and folk feel sorry for him. Basically he attempted, in collusion with Sevilla to drive down the amount they should pay :bang:

If his Diarra deal wasn't explicit enough how about "Gio- Agreed sale to Udinese."

we did agree that tho, but gio didnt want to go, harry has said it many times, even as recently as tis week.

That second paragraph contradicts your first.

Surely if we're planning a deadline day signing on 12th January then the deal has 'been brewing up for a while' as you put it?

POTL, peanut and storts are the only credible ITK worth listening too.

I think there are more. JJetset on here seems to be very well respected with links to the club. Other guys on other forums also seem to be fairly credible.
There are lots of guys with contacts. But deals are very complicated and can fall down at any time. So take all ITK, no matter why from, with a pinch of salt.

I agree with your thinking, but it would appear to be a safe bet to guess we will go for an 11th hour signing, or attempt one.

Didn't we try for Charlie Adam on the last day of Jan last year? And then a few years before Danny Murphy signed.

Cahill in the summer too...

I think Dan likes the brinkmanship of it all.

My first thought at seeing lastminute.com is signing a player on deadline day, such as the VDV (or Keane) signing, where we've come from out of the blue to do a deal. The Pav, Parker, Corluka transfers had been going on in the press for the previous week or two, and the Corluka transfer seemed like months. IMO, I wouldn't call those transfers last minute because they were basically done it was just a matter of confirmation

Yeah definitely, but those sort of transfers have sort of fell upon Levy and he's tried to trash it out all of a sudden. I don't think he actually plans to make a signing at the last minute which is the point I'm making is that an ITK can't make that claim as anyone can guess that.

Not trying to argue as I agree, just giving my reasoning :)

Remember. If we sign Cahill/Samba it'll one of them in - Bassong out. We're upgrading, not adding. Either is far superior to Bassong.

so assume we replace bassong with samba, it leaves us with king, kaboul, gallas, dawson and samba. what does harry do when 4 of them or even all of them are available at one time? one of them wouldn't even get on the bench, is samba going to come in as 1st choice? what would that do to kaboul's morale? would samba join if he's going to have the same bit part role that bassong has had? i just don't see how this could work unless you assume king and gallas will never play, which i don't really see as a fair assumption given they've contributed 11 and 9 league appearances respectively this season, and we know for sure that when king is fit, he plays.

I see your point, but how many times have we been in a position in the last few years when all of them are fit? Gallas' calf seems to be causing him a lot of trouble these days, we all know the King situation, and Dawson has actually been fairly prone to injury recently.

Thats a very short term view, and one the player will have to consider. He may not play 10 games this season and will miss out on a league winners medal

Next season and beyond though, we will have Dawson and Kaboul, possibly Caulker retained and an injury ravaged Ledley King. Gallas, for me, should be either let go or maintained as a squad player. It should be him and King that realise they wont play every game, will be drafted in and out depending on fitness. From next season on, its highly likely that Dawson, Kaboul and Samba will hotly contest the 2 CB roles, with Caulker an able understudy at 4th choice, but getting game time in 2 cup competitions and some league games.
We could be in the champions league, with King crocked, Gallas aging and unfit, with Dawson and KAboul our first choice pairing and only supported by Caulker? Thats suicide.

Bring someone in. Samba proven in Prem and can offer something this year rather than a Coates or Savic type who will need time to bed in and offer nothing short term.
