If the difference between valuations for Benteke is £7m, wouldn't the £5m from Hudd (if he passes his medical) close the gap to £2m (which imo we could sell Parker for)?

Doesn't really work like that though.

If we offer 18 million for Benteke it doesn't mean we'd just throw all the Hud money right in the pot. It's more about valuations. If we sold a player for 10 million it doesn't mean we'd be able to go out and spend 28 million on a player.

Obviously we'll have to go up to meet them in price and selling some players would help that a bit I'm sure.

I really wouldn't wanna splash out 25m on Benteke, don't get me wrong I think he's a good player but and I would like us to sign just not for 25m. Won't blame Levy if he backs out of the deal if that is what Villa are demanding for him.

I wonder if he took them to the "My big plans Control room" with the glass floor at the bottom of his yacht. Then as they were all sitting round the model of the stadium centre piece and he was delivering his "ambitious" seech, he pulled a lever and Dempsey's chair tipped him into a shark infested sea pit.

At least, I hope he did.
He then spun round in his chair stroking his pussy ;)

£7m doesn't seem much of a difference. Let's get it done, it will transform our prospects.

We pay nearly that much a year just to service our debts (our interest payments). Also £7m would be a four year contract for a player making £35k (which I think is what Sandro is on). Or for one year, it would be almost enough to cover the amount the papers say Bale wants. Make no mistake, £7m is a lot of money. It's easy to lose sight of in a world where we speak of £70m, and, trust me, I am not judging your opinion as I fall pray to it all the time. But it's probably safe to assume that Levy doesn't lose sight of it and that's why the gap is prohibitive at the moment. Hopefully we find a way to sort it though.

Is that something people really want to wish for? I mean when a player does that kind of thing to us there is outrage. I think it's poor behaviour by Beneteke imo.

Unfortunately we live in a dog eat dog world. If it's the only way DL will be able to afford and sign Benteke then i don't care!

If it happened to us we would be pissed off! But that's life!

The only way i can see us coming to an agreement with AVFC for Benteke is going to be a fee of £18million and installments of whatever that covers up to £25million.

Cant see us bidding outright £25million.

Maybe as a sweetener we can maybe offer them Livermore or Carrol on loan perhaps.

Either way it wont be an easy deal but to me its all worth the while. Would love Benteke at Spurs.

My first thought is that this specific valuation isn't something based on sales, although we have a certain outlay that can be enhanced with transfers out (which in that general sense has impact on any deals). But in this case, I kind of feel like we have a value that we think is fair. They have a value that they think is fair. And if this is going to happen, we will find a way to bridge that gap.....probably with them lowering value and us offering add-ons.

We can afford an extra 7 million, but if they are asking 25m, it would seem that we're in the 18m region. Which bring it in line with our more expensive transfers historically. So there seems to be an inherent logic to it.

It will be interesting to see how this proceeds. But probably not always so interesting to read about how it proceeds in this thread :D

Yeah, Parker and Hudd are assets with a value to the club. When they are sold it doesn't mean "oh, we just got £7M in extra money we weren't expecting, let's blow it on something cool!" I could maybe see Levy going up to around £20M, but if Villa don't drop to that I can't see him paying more. We've seen it with Leandro too where we were willing to maybe pay £15-17M at one time for him, but we wouldn't go to £19-20M because we just didn't value him that highly.

So we're in for another player we most likely not going to get. We're offering less for a wantaway player than the club are asking for and finally Hudd might be moving but he might not pass a fitness test.

Who mentioned déjà vu there?

Would love a player like Bernard, as said am unsure on Benteke at the prices mentioned though (although I can appreciate the vale of the risk and would be positive enough as he is a striker) and yes Hudd needs sold to whatever club has Dr. Nick Riviera as their physician.

I don't know how you guys do it, I'd be so negative and just ignoring the transfer stuff especially how things turned out in the winter, or perhaps it's a 'pass the time' kind of thing. Admire the enthusiasm though.

Porto should be a done deal for a player such as Bernard. Very young (20), short and slight, he'd get eaten alive in the Prem. In Portugal he'll have an easier time of things, not to mention Porto's track record for selling on, it really is a no-brainer and the place where he can have most success.

A lot of people, including those inside football, thought the same about Modric

I don't believe we cannot afford AV's valuation, rather we don't agree with that valuation.

I agree with that. Was just stating that we can match the price they want if a couple players are sold. If we were to get him for lower, than all the better.

Can you point me in the direction of a time when any club in the world ever has been in for a player that they will definitely get?

I havent seen as much on benteke as some of you lot but is he a skillful forward that could make clever runs when teams just defend against us or more of a running on to a long ball forward? kinda like darren bent?? Villa didnt play great football last year and to me (and from what I have seen) he is more of the chasing a long ball type of player??

i might be wrong!

Its bad practice to think of player sales and acquisitions as anything else other than individual transactions. Each player is an asset to the club and should be considered in terms of what that assets overall value to the club is, and maximising that value.

When you start thinking in terms of "players exchange" you diminish the value of the player being exchanged and the player your buying. Overall you end up paying far too much. We have decided that Benteke is worth £18mill, that means we won't pay much more than this, mitigating circumstances (i.e. lack of alternative options) might see this figure creep up.

Where player exchange works well is when we value a player at a certain amount but the club we are negotiating with value them more because of a) need, b) 'arry's their manager c) available options/competition.

We would like to exchange a few players for Benteke, but giving them Parker and/or Huddlestone means we will reduce the expected cash sum by an equivalent amount.

Just a thought - JJ mentioned that the other day that we probably won't sign Bernard due to 'internal interference'.

I wonder if it is in fact the case that Sherwood wants Chadli and AVB is keen on Bernard?

I thought Villa played good football badly last season if that makes any sense with opposite being Stoke who played bad football well.

I'm not sure about how clever his runs are mainly as teams didn't really set up to defend against Villa for long periods all that often but his touch is decent and he has poaching instinct and is young enough to be taught movement if it is lacking.

Still don't think he's worth £25m and if any team think he is worth paying that much for it won't be us.

Hopefully, another ITK can back up WPD's new post. Always good to get a bit of convergence on info ! Bernard has most likely been quiet this past couple of weeks to fortnight due to the Confed and Libertadores, expect his agent to start stirring things up again now and for more rumours to be floating about.
