I can't see Daniel Levy laying out £25 million - almost £10 million more than our record transfer fee for Moutinho, after spending £15 million on Dembele, who plays in his position, and with Dembele, Sandro, Parker, Huddlestone, Sigurdsson, Livermore, Jenas and Carroll all still on the books. Going on his past form, I really can't see that happening, as much as I'd really like it to.

3 players that are clearly not part of out future plans. Carroll could be easily loaned out as he isn't ready to be a PL just yet and Parker is probably one serious injury away from being out for a while / end of career.

Looking to the future the only reliable midfield players we have right now are:

Dembele, Sandro and Sigurdsson (and even he hasn't proved himself yet).

We are clearly short at least one good midfielder and probably two.

Moutinho plays a different role to Dembele and whilst Dembele is adapt at the CM role, he can play effectively further up the pitch, given that he was previously a striker.

And what happened when we got in £17 million for Carrick, or £30 million for Berbatov, or £20 million for Keane, or £30 for Modric, or £12 million for Van Der Vaart? Did we take it, add another chunk and go and get the best, established world-class player on the market in as an immediate like-for-like replacement? If we did then my cock's a kipper.

Just breaking those statements down a bit.

£17m Carrick - Well we spent well over £40m that summer on: Benny, Zokora, Berbatov, Malbranque, Chimbonda, Mido and Dervite

£30m Berbatov + £20m Keane - Again we spent around £70m in the window that we sold Berbatov and Keane on: Modric, GdS, Gomes, Bentley, Pavyluchenko and Corluka. We then spent a further £21m on strikers in Jan (Keane and Defoe) and £17m on Palacios and Chimbonda.

£30m Modric + £12m VdV - Again we spent a decent amount in the summer, circa. £55m on Adebayor, Dembele, Dempsey, Sigurddson, Lloris and Vertonghen.

But this is why we all think we'll be spending some money in Jan, as you can see from your own above examples, when we have sold big name players we have gone on to spend a hefty chunk of money above what we made on their sales. Thus following that pattern you could easily speculate that we will be spending something in the region of £20m seems about right to me.

And as for the whole world-class player bit - that's a hard thing to do when you're a club of the size and stature we were when we sold Carrick, Keane and Berbatov. Only in the last few seasons have we become established as a serious top 4 PL contenting team who regularly qualifies for Europe and aspires to be in the CL.

The normally reliable Gards on twitter is saying that the Moutinho deal is 'close' for what it's worth.

I'm fascinated that this one seemed dead in the water and is now all full-speed ahead...

I notice that @Gards44, @akqayid (now@neileatson ) & @jetsetyid often interact on twitter

However, from what jj has previously said it seems we are unlikely to get any major signings like JM

Are we entertaining any of these still?

@tancredipalmeri: Last but not least, growing the rumour on Tottenham going for Sneijder, but still no confirmation

I think the big thing here (if these are true) is that "going for" is a lot differing than "going to get."

I like Sneijder, but to me there's not much chance we get him, and we can't have another flailing end of the window where we're left holding our heads in our hands to catch our tears.

Let this be held up as a shining example of the kind of Twitter that is perfectly acceptable. None of that shit from some fuckwad with 'insider' or 'ITK' in their username.

not one to pick holes but didn't we buy sigs, Hugo and verts before we sold luka and vdv?

so maybe there is still the money available for strengthening the squad

If there was any chance of us getting JM that boat sailed in August I'm afraid which is a pity as he is exactly what we needed.

we seem to be linked with alot of AM's or CM's, where does that leave Dempsey and Sig

I almost feel like if we add a CM/AM and don't sell anyone off, we should just loan out Siggy. I love the kid, I know what he can do, but as a 22-year-old there's nothing wrong with him going to another club just like he did at Swansea last season and hopefully kick on with consistent playing time.

I'd argue that Carroll/Livermore would be the better options to loan out, but I don't know if Carroll would break in as quickly as Siggy could (keeping half a season in mind), and I think getting Siggy playing time is more important than Livermore as well. Heck, maybe loan out Siggy and Livermore in January. Get them both time, and with Parker and potentially a new CM/AM coming in, we should be able to cover their absences.

This is all just me thinking out loud, though. I'd prefer we just give Siggy more time as I think he's a way better player when he's playing to his capabilities than Dempsey.

I agree with you but if we buy another CM/AM I can see Hudd going, Livermore out on loan and us having 2 players in a position that is redundant as well as quiet a few youth prospects behind them

I also want Hudd to be sold. I think he's just about run his course here and I think a team like Stoke makes a lot of sense as they like to really play the long balls into the box to their taller front men and they also were close to adding him in the Summer. If the interest is still there, it makes a lot of sense.

I dont want him to be sold tbh but I want the player who got us to CL back and that doesnt look like happening and I think Harry and Sunderland would want Hudd as well Fulham tbh

That will leave
DM: Parker and Sandro
CM: Dembele, Carroll, new guy*
AM:new guy*, Dempsey, Sig

The dempsey signing made no long term sense to me and it still doesnt, in one window a new signing has already become surplus to requirements for the rest of the season
