Our problem is that we don't pay the wages and the only trade off for that will be winning something. However, we won't compete well in multiple competition with the drop off from our first XI to the rest. To improve our First XI we would have to sell current First XI players, but improving the quality of the squad is probably more important and more economically viable. If we could get top money for Walker and anything half decent for Sissoko we could make some improvements although I'd doubt they would set many pulses racing.

Much of our business depends on factors us as fans will have some trouble identifying.
Is Wimmer done? If so, we may require and additional centre back, which in turn frees Dier up to rack up more minutes as a midfielder, seeing as Winks probably wont be in contention for some while yet.

What about Sissoko? Will he (and us) be content with essentially being a warm body we can chuck in when we need some defensive cover or when we face poor teams in the cups? Could a desision on him be linked to whether or not Onomah can make the leap to look like a genuine senior footballer like Winks did?

What about Janssen, do we stick or twist?

But seeing as this is a place to make wishes, I've come to the realisation that I think Poch can coax the best out of Ross Barkley, and that he could both do a job behind the strikers, in a midfield 2 (as long as Dier or Wanyama Plays), and could even be some form of long term replacement for Dembele. I've never really been a fan of Barkley, and I'm more or less wanting him based on what I think he can become under Pochs tutelage.

JJ's posted in the Walker thread that we will be buying a replacement if he goes as KWP isn't ready yet.

Looking at Trix's info from yesterday I'm starting to wonder if the favourite shop is Southampton and if the players might be Soares and Tadic.

We won't be after Tadic. Very inconsistent, quite lazy without the ball and he's 28!

Is there some reason you think we're after two players?

I didn't realize he was that old. With his creativity he could have been a decent back-up for Eriksen, but agree it's unlikely we'll sign a 28 year old.

Yeah they got into the team as we were still in the building process mate, the team now is very different to what it was 12 and 24 months ago, we're in a different process now.

Are we the finished article? No. We can still improve, like we did by signing Wanyama when the same 'we can't improve our first team' lines were being trotted out.

In order of priority if no first team player leaves

1. Creative central midfielder to rotate with dembele with winks still getting some game time
2. Quick dribbler with an end product who can play in any of the forward positions behind striker
3. Another central defender with experience able to push dier to partner toby and Jan
4. Experienced premier league centre forward who can make an impact late on in games

Maybe a left back/wing back to cover Rose?

Our problem is there is a disparity between the strength of our first eleven and our transfer resources. We basically have a champions league quality first 11 but europa league transfer resources. So we can't go out and buy ready made champs league quality players to improve our first 11. That doesn't mean we can't improve it but our route of buying hidden gems with high potential means we will always end up with Janssen's - who sometimes could make an immediate impact but more times than not will need time to develop before they are ready to challenge for a first team spot

If we buy to improve our First XI I'm fairly certain that whatever player is replaced will want to move on. That is acceptable although any upgrades on what we have would be very expensive. The 'replaced' players will not, IMO, be happy to sit on the bench and we would therefore be in the same position with regard to lack of squad depth. The scenario I used earlier in the thread used the rumours a while ago that Dembele was in the sights of some Chinese club. Nothing came of that, but if we were offered enough money for Dembele that we could replace him with Kovacic for example, and he wanted to go for a final big pay day, I'd be more than happy. As things stand though, we need a better bench to be able to compete on all fronts and that's what we should be looking to improve.

Koeman's said that if Barkley doesn't make a decision in the next week he'll be sold.

I reckon we've tapped him up, which isn't coo'

It's football though isn't it? City will have been taking to Walker's agent, United to Dier's. They'll all say it's just hypotheticals, but we all know what goes on. No-one even bothers talking to a club over a fee until they've talked to agent about whether the player wants to come and the financials.
