Feel we dodged a bullet with Lukaku, never watched him and thought 'I really want him at Spurs'

That must be Everton done spending this window, such an investment for them but I still don't see them as a threat this season.

Not so much bullet dodged but I'm not really convinced by him, Martinez has a lot of work to do improving his game.

Christ, Everton spending 25 million on a player. Isn't that one of the signs of the apocalypse?

That surely is their entire budget gone just to remain at the same level as last season. Unless they plan on selling Baines or Coleman.

Lukaku has proven his goal scoring worth in the last two seasons so this is a pretty significant signing by Everton. The idea that 'they wont be much of a threat to us' this season seems laughable. Unless the thinking is that neither side will be much of a threat to the top positions.

Pochettino has a hell of a job on his hands to finish anywhere above 7th if you ask me. And that'll lead to an interesting situation yet again because we've basically been sacking managers for failing to play decent football and/or break through the glass ceiling of 4th (or even sacking a manager who has done that twice).

I'm still satisfied to let him take control of the existing squad to see if he can do more than last year's managers with them. The manager is our significant signing. And that's an interesting test of his ability - to move forward with very little change to the side compared to last year. But I'm not at all optimistic that we'll finish up in the top 4 - it looks pretty much like it could be troublesome to finish where we did last year given Man U's likely improvement from last season.

1. We were utterly shite last season and onl finished 3 points behind Everton.
2. Everton have barely improved their squad from last season and they've basically signed the players they had on loan last season and Besic...

If carrys on banging a goal in every 2 games I doubt they will be complaining.

They will if he gets injured though... £25 million for Everton is a case of putting all their eggs in one basket.
They would probably be better off if they'd bought two strikers for £10 million each.
That said, they are apparently looking at getting Traore on loan again, in the hope he doesn't spend his whole loan spell injured this time!

Delefeu was brilliant for them last season and he won't be back on loan this year, so despite their purchases they're actually worse than they were last year (subject to Besic being any good).

There's nothing to say that under Martinez they won't improve further as a team though

I think their problems will be squad depth to handle the mid-week games. I'll be shocked if they finish ahead of Spurs this season.

I do rate Martinez as a manager though - i think the players he has will get better, they just won't have enough of them.

I love the way people are laughing at Everton for the fee, it's a bit rich considering Soldado's output last season

Lukaku on his record for them seems a good buy and of course I think Martinez is the best manager around and he will certainly improve most of their players. At the end of the day goals win games so that is why we all spend lots of money on anyone decent

I'll have a £100 bet, donated to SC, with you that he scores more than 2 goals from open play in the Prem this season

Yeah but he's a cart horse. Only cause we got done (rate Soldado and reckon he's going to rip it up this season, but as you've stated, he seems expensive considering his meagre return) doesn't mean we can't mock others who we believe are foolishly spending their money. Where's the joy in that??
Was it not Jesus who said, "no matter your previous mistakes take heart in the folly of others."

Are people really laughing at Everton for spending £28 mil on Lukaku?

He's 21 years old with a 1 in 2 ratio for the last 2 seasons playing on loan for unfamiliar teams. He's been a full international in one of the world's fastest rising national teams since he was 17.

He is widely regarded as one of the hottest talents in world football and I personally think it's a major coup for Everton to sign him on a permanent deal, and more fool Chelsea for letting him go. Plus he's only going to rise in value, he's not even close to being in the prime of his career. I can honestly see him commanding a £50mil+ fee the next time he moves.
