Inevitably we have all had some difficult recent conversations with friends and acquaintances who know we support
Tottenham. Almost unwittingly I have developed an 'alternative to the mainstream' explanation of what happened. It goes like this:
When we were in the UEFA League the club justifiably ranked it second to getting into the UCL places and then eventually having a crack at winning the EPL itself. The received opinion being that it is too difficult to compete on several or multiple fronts (1982 comes to mind). Thus we exited quite meekly to what was certainly a more committed Dortmund side.
On reflection I believe that that exit in some ways contributed to what came later in our season. Up until that point we were rotating many players....the full backs come to mind but also Mason, Chadli and Carroll were all playing regularly....as was Wimmer. Once we went out of the UEFA League many of those blokes hardly got any time on the field and would have lost match fitness. As we know the bans for Dembele and Alli demanded changes for the first team and I think their replacements were off the pace for the job we needed them to do.
Am I clutching at straws here to explain our demise or is there some value in this explanation:whistle:

Jesus - people need to let this go

We started and ended the season with some results that really hurt us points wise. Sure. But generally the season was better than any of us could have hoped for and we've qualified for the CL with a very young squad that will be better for this year's experience, and who will hopefully be bolstered in the summer.

The Newcastle result was a kick in the nuts. No doubt about it. And the fact that a bunch of toothless cretins have posted a load of 'forever in our shadow, you farkin nuffin' videos on Facebook WA mildly annoying for a day or two.

But come on guys, let it go. As has been said, it happens. You can wrap it up however you want, you can cross examine it, justify it - do whatever you like - but at the end of the day we didn't put enough points on the board. There's no shame in that.

So seriously, for those of you that are still crying into your pints, go and do something to take your mind off it (a run maybe?) and then reflect on the reality of the situation.

- you would have bitten your hand off for third at the start of the season
- we are in the CL
- we can really look forward to next season (which is going to be brutal by the way)

I've been telling scum fans we did it on purpose so they kept Wenger as manager, they go pretty quite
Same here but I've been adding that they'll also keep Giroud as striker by getting a hatrick against a v poor Villa side

Mason, Carroll, Chadil and Wimmer will not play league games if everyone is fit. Now that Dembele has gone up a level, Mason is no match. Wimmer provides good competiton but it's clear that Poch has his favorites. The ethos needs to be, you fight for your place and we should buy players who can push for a first team place and make the regulars look over their shoulder.

Why are people still talking about this for God's sake lol

This is SC...you will still find derisory comments about Robbie Keane having two boyhood clubs, FFS :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Seriously, it's not that long ago, and it hurt. My older brotha is a Newcastle season ticket holder, since 1991, (went to Uni oop Norf, married a local lass etc.). They got relegated...and he still got to laugh at me (the ****) (n)

If it makes you feel better, Citeh fans have carried a massive grudge against us since 1982 because Ricky Villa scored a great goal :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Those who do not remember their past are condemned to repeat their mistakes. Santayana.

It hurts, but if we understand and learn from it
we will cope better in the future.
Need to examine the reasons before we move on.
Shit happens, move on, doesn't do it for me.

I think we need to allow people to grieve, just like people should be allowed to say shit happens, move on. That is what the forum is for, we are a group of people with a common interest that are just dealing with disappointment differently, no biggie.

Too many what ifs. Think we were showing signs of being spent towards end of season, took a wrong turn with the overkill with the Chelsk game, and the Newcastle game showed a set of players that had nothing left in the tank...physically, mentally, spiritually and actually! It would be terrible if we had an old, jaded squad, a manager that was set in his ways, and a club with no future vision. Luckily we don't. Learn and move forward.

I agree.
I did see some brave souls attempting to reason things out almost immediately after. Me, I felt the last thing anyone needed was me trying to analysing things out straight after that. It left everyone deflated at the end of what should have been a mood enhancing season. There's just no getting around it.

Imagine how Athletico fans would react if someone went on their forums today and pointed to their Europa trophies and league title and how they should contrast it to where they were not so long ago, and get over it. We have something like the junior version of that - we all have to deal with it. And like anything in life, we all deal with it in different ways - me, I painted my parrot red and white and dared it to learn to say always in our shadow :mad::mad:

Did they record it on Betamax & watch it 12 months later? :cautious:
Don't know about betamax, but watched that game on a mate's vcr a million times. Was at the game, the best! Was behind the goal, lost my shoe when Crooks scored, that's when we went really crazy, but somehow got it back when we were celebrating Villa's goal.
