Spurs are set to lose top prospect Milos Veljkovic in January.

The 20-year-old defensive midfielder has been unable to agree a new contract this season and talks between player and club have completely broken down.

Hope that this is not a case of missed opportunities or mismanagement as he seemed to have a bright future with us, I thought we had been pretty good at getting new contracts for our squad recently.

Opinions on whether he makes the grade?

Weird one this...must be something going on under the surface as with the current philosophy at the club he would appear to be a good fit. Would be interesting to know if anyone with insider knowledge could give a hint?

I like what we have going at the moment. Poch has created a system that allows young players to break through into the first team squad.

Unfortunately, sometimes talented players will not fit his plans or might want regular football before they are ready for a top 6 club.

I've read good things about Veljkovic but if he goes onto have a good career else where it doesn't necessarily mean we have made a mistake.

Suggestion on the Spurs Chat pages was that he wouldn't sign a contract until he was part of the first team and that he wasn't going to be part of the first team until he signed a new contract.
Looks like neither side blinked (yet) so now he's likely to leave.

It's frustrating but I understand the club has a hitherto successful policy regarding player contracts and you can't bend the rules on a one off basis or a potentially harmful precedent is set (see Steffon Armitage and RFU).

Cannot balme him at all for wanting the chance to emulate the likes of Mason, Dier, Alli and likes.

Great shame but i would guess that Poch has already decided who will feature in the squad and likely play first team football for the foreseeable future.

True fact. not all of our academy players will make it into the first team.

True, but my understanding was that he isn't just another academy player and already has ability to be on fringe of squad. Kind of player I'd expect to see played in Europa League or loaned to a good Championship side.

The answers in regards contract negotiations may explain it (or part of it). Following all the issues with Ade, I can understand if they are not willing to bend to his desires, regardless of the talent.

If a 20 year old prospect is at Spurs right now, watching the opportunities being given - sometimes from nowhere - to young players. Watching the exciting transformation that is going on through the club, and then decides they won't sign a new contract with us - well I would suggest that at best they lack confidence in their abilities or at worse, a difficult b*gger looking out for themselves.

Well we don't have any more information than what we're told but I can't help thinking he and his agent decided and orchestrated this from a period ago. I suspect the club had little chance unless they played him.
Not particularly pleased with his attitude and bye bye if what I suspect is true.

And if he's really not interested in us the quicker we wheel him out the better, don't want any of our other boys poisoned

Always been a prospect BUT, at 20 he is older than Dier when he started playing regular games for Spurs and older than Dele who is now obviously on his way to Madrid etc etc bla bla (office a holes today sorry!)

Point is, whilst he may be a good prospect he is unlikely to be as good as some of the young players already playing. We cannot keep everyone that comes through the youth so if we have to lose him it is indeed a shame but not something we cannot live without.

Sure we'd have agreed a contract if we had been convinced he was one for our future. To me it's more a shame it didn't work out rather than a shame we are losing him.

Strange one this. We have reaped the benefits of playing a defensively minded midfielder (Dier) from the start of the season and Veljkovic is the obvious backup but has seemingly been frozen out. I would have thought a run out here and there would have kept him onboard, given him some experience and benefitted the team. We could be in trouble if Dier gets sidelined for any length of time unless we buy in January - which seems ludicrous with Veljkovic already on the books. We'll most likely lose him for next to nothing and then pay through the nose for a similar player or hope for the best.

If he honestly doesn't think he would be given the chance with us if we thought he was ready he's blind. Let's see where he ends up and how he progresses else where. For every Kane and Alli, there is a Rodwell and Sinclair.
